Players of Diablo 4 are expressing frustration over the sudden server shutdowns that occur without warning, which can potentially disrupt their gaming sessions. Despite the game's enormous success since its launch in early June, becoming Blizzard's fastest selling game to date, it hasn't been a completely smooth ride. While critics and players alike have praised many aspects of Diablo 4, some fans have compiled a list of missing quality-of-life features, particularly in the UI and skill trees, to bring to Blizzard's attention in hopes that they will be addressed in future updates. While Blizzard has demonstrated a willingness to frequently update the game, some players are beginning to feel uneasy about the process.
As part of its fully online live service model, Diablo 4 frequently undergoes updates and fixes that require server downtime. Unfortunately, this can be a frustrating experience for players like Same-Drink2905, who have experienced sudden and unexpected server shutdowns that kick them out of the game without warning. To address this issue, Same-Drink2905 took to the Diablo 4 subReddit to call for Blizzard to implement a warning message in advance of server shutdowns, similar to the system used in World of Warcraft. This suggestion received widespread support from other players who are also concerned about losing progress due to unexpected server downtime.
For Hardcore players, the absence of prior notice can prove to be fatal. With permadeath in place, the risk of losing characters permanently looms large if the server shuts down unexpectedly. Recently, two well-known Diablo 4 hardcore players lost their characters under dubious circumstances, one at level 100 and the other at level 92. The level 100 character's run came to an abrupt end due to a server disconnect, as Diablo 4 no longer has an auto-save feature before the game shuts down suddenly. Diablo 4 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
