Aniplex streamed the final promotional video for the Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid film on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, marking the conclusion of the High School arc. This film is one of two in the sequel anime project for the Rascal Does Not Dream light novel series, which was originally adapted into the Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai television anime.

The Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid film debuted in Japanese theaters on Friday, December 1, 2023, and initially ranked #4 in the box office charts for its opening weekend. Despite dropping to #8 over the weekend, the film still achieved impressive ticket sales numbers.

During the film's third week of release, Aniplex has also revealed that viewers of Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid in theaters will be given a bonus character illustration. This exclusive mini-colored paper character illustration was created by Satomi Tamura, the film's character designer.

The film preview is approximately 60 seconds in length and centers on various characters from the Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid film. Characters who played significant roles in the series' earlier adaptations are also showcased and are hinted to have a substantial part in the film.

In its first three days, the film sold 119 thousand tickets and earned roughly 165 million yen, or approximately 1.11 million USD. In its second week, it earned around 66 million yen, or roughly 454 thousand USD, bringing the cumulative total to about 271 million yen, or 1.86 million USD. The film ranked at #4 on the box office charts in its opening weekend and dropped to #8 in its second.

The illustration will be distributed during the third week of the film's release, featuring characters Rio Futaba, Nodoka Toyohama, Kaede Azusagawa, and Shoko Makinohara. It is currently unclear if additional gifts will be given out in later weeks, or if there are limited supplies of the illustration.

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid will conclude the story's High School arc, with Soichi Masui returning to direct at CloverWorks Studios. Masahiro Yokotani supervised and wrote the script for the film, and Tamura designed the characters and served as chief animation director, as mentioned earlier. The original light novels' sequel arc, known as the University Student Arc, is confirmed to be inspiring an anime adaptation.
