Despite wrapping up filming earlier in 2023, the release date for the fourth season of The Boys will not be announced anytime soon. The success of the first three seasons on Amazon Prime has garnered a dedicated fan base eagerly anticipating the next season and its spinoff series. The ongoing writers' strike has significantly impacted the production of various films and TV shows, including Daredevil: Born Again and Thunderbolts. Additionally, there is a looming possibility of an actors' strike, prompting certain productions that managed to persist during the WGA strike to expedite their completion before facing potential disruptions.
The creator and showrunner of The Boys series, Erik Kripke, provided an update on season 4 through a tweet. According to Kripke, the release date of The Boys season 4 will depend on the resolution of the ongoing writers' strike. In his tweet, Kripke urges the studios to negotiate a fair deal. As one of Amazon's most successful series, Kripke is determined that the studio will not have access to The Boys until the Writers Guild of America (WGA) receives a satisfactory agreement. In addition to his message, Kripke shared unrelated artwork featuring The Deep's cereal, Choctopus Puffs.
In response to a Twitter user's question about why The Boys season 4 couldn't be released despite the completion of filming, Kripke explained that there is still a substantial amount of dialogue that needs to be recorded by the actors in post-production. He also mentioned that dialogue editing is performed to enhance the storytelling. The definition of writing has been a point of contention between the WGA and the studios. While the WGA believes that showrunners are ultimately responsible for all aspects of writing, Kripke appears to share this viewpoint.
Kripke has shown his support for the writers and the WGA throughout the strike. Recently, he played a role in organizing a picket line for The Boys outside of Amazon Studios in Culver City. Kripke also drew a comparison between the studios and the villainous corporation Vought from The Boys series. In a recent tweet, he urged the studios not to become Vought and shared two images. The first image showcased Black Noir assisting Vought in union busting, while the second image promoted the picket line with the message, "The Boys picket Vought Studios," but with "Vought Studios" crossed out and replaced with "Amazon."
As the writers' strike enters its 9th week, it shows no signs of nearing its end. Negotiations for a deal between the studios and actors are ongoing, but there is a possibility of an actors' strike. If this continues, it may be quite some time before fans can expect the release of The Boys season 4 or its Gen V spinoff series.
The Boys seasons 1-3 are now available on Amazon Prime Video.
