Universal Studios and Blumhouse have revealed that The Black Phone will have a sequel scheduled to hit theaters on June 27, 2025, as reported by Variety. Following the impressive global box office success of the original film in 2022, grossing $161 million, it became evident that the studio had another potential franchise in their hands. It remains uncertain at this time whether any of the previous cast members will reprise their roles or if new faces will be introduced in the upcoming sequel. As a serial killer lurks, a unique device holds the key to uncovering his true capabilities.
In the inaugural entry of what promises to be a series under Blumhouse, Ethan Hawke portrayed The Grabber, a malefactor notorious for abducting numerous children through his sinister and refined methods. The plot centers around young siblings, Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), as they navigate the perilous existence imposed by the relentless antagonist within their community. Trapped and with no escape, Finney stumbles upon a phone that enables direct communication with The Grabber's past victims, who are determined to aid his liberation from the clutches of their tormentor.
The movie was helmed by Scott Derrickson, showcasing his expertise in horror, which he had garnered acclaim for in his previous work, Sinister. The director's involvement in the sequel has not been confirmed by the studio yet, but with the release date being nearly two years away, Blumhouse has ample time to determine the director for the project. With a sustained period of success, the studio can now explore even greater creative freedom in their pursuit of diverse horror franchises.
Blumhouse Has Had a Huge Year
Following the conclusion of Halloween Ends, Blumhouse recognized the importance of developing new franchises to ensure the studio's future success. As part of their strategy to maximize the value of their properties, The Black Phone 2 will join the slate of upcoming productions, which also includes M3GAN 2.0 in 2025 and The Exorcist: Deceiver. Furthermore, the impressive box office performance anticipated for Five Nights at Freddy's during its opening weekend suggests that Blumhouse has the potential to become an even more dominant force in the realm of horror films. The direction that the story of The Grabber will take remains a suspenseful question we eagerly await the answer to.
The Black Phone is currently available to stream on Peacock.
