The Addictive Appeal of Yellowstone: Discover Why Fans Can't Help but 'Hate Watch' the Show

Discover the intriguing phenomenon of 'hate-watching' among Yellowstone fans Delve into the reasons why this immensely popular TV series captivates viewers, even those who claim to have a love-hate relationship with it Uncover the unique allure of Yellowstone through the eyes of its loyal fanbase

Yellowstone is undeniably one of the most popular TV shows currently airing. However, surprisingly, a significant number of fans engage in what is commonly known as "hate-watching" the series. The reasons for this behavior are quite diverse.

Much has transpired since the airing of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 in November of last year. Speculations regarding off-screen conflicts between creator Taylor Sheridan and the show's lead actor, Kevin Costner, have been circulating. It is worth noting that Costner is currently occupied with his own western endeavor called Horizon.

Paramount Plus recently announced that the show will be concluding with Season 5, amidst the ongoing chaos. However, due to the writers' and actors' strikes, filming for Season 5 Part 2 has not yet begun, despite a year passing since the last episode aired and fans eagerly awaiting new content.

Currently, Yellowstone has gained a new following through its partnership with CBS, attracting fresh viewers. As a result, devoted fans are now sharing with newcomers their reasons for "hate watching" the series.

Yellowstone fans explain why they “hate watch” the show

With Yellowstone airing from the beginning over on CBS, Reddit u/Vagabond_Tea started a new thread explaining why they’re not too impressed with what they’ve seen so far.

"I'm almost done with Season 1. Does it improve? Does it undergo any changes?" they inquired, expressing their dissatisfaction with the series because it revolves around "an affluent Caucasian family resorting to violence and other tactics to maintain their control over the impoverished Native Americans on the reservation, as well as anyone who opposes them."

They went on to say, "Honestly, I don't know why I dislike them compared to other shows. It's evident that other shows also feature families or groups employing violence to achieve their goals (such as The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Peaky Blinders, Dallas, etc.), but for some reason, the Duttons are particularly intolerable (especially the daughter and father)."

Numerous individuals have engaged in the discussion, with many recommending that the Redditor should resign immediately, citing the decline in quality as the seasons continue. "Without a doubt, it's not getting any better," expressed one person. "At this point, I'm simply hate-watching it."

This term has been previously associated with Yellowstone. During the airing of Season 5 Part 1, a person expressed their opinion on X/Twitter, stating: "I am going to hate watch Yellowstone." Another individual recently admitted: "I believe I hate watch Yellowstone lol."

Delving deeper into their reasons for feeling this way, a Reddit comment explains: "The frequent use of montages accompanied by country music as mere fillers in Season 4 and 5 exposes the subpar writing, as they are evidently using it as a means to pass time."

Furthermore, several individuals have pointed out that the content bears a striking resemblance to a truck advertisement and that the character motivations lack coherence. This aspect is rather disappointing, as the show had the potential to be outstanding if the writing had maintained the level of quality seen in the initial seasons.

"It's primarily melodramatic. If you find yourself disenchanted after one season, it may not be suitable for your taste. In my opinion, it doesn't notably improve over time," voiced another commentator, while a third proposed an alternative perspective: "It becomes more comprehensible when you interpret it as John embodying a self-absorbed parent who has inflicted significant emotional harm upon his children."

Several Redditors provided solutions to the raised issues by suggesting to stick to the spin-offs. One user stated, "If you didn't enjoy Season 1, you probably won't enjoy the rest. Watch the prequel 1883 instead. The characters are more likable as they are good people struggling to survive. It's a shorter series with only 10 episodes, and it offers a more captivating story."
