Tales of Arise, a surprise hit in 2021, won Best RPG at the 2021 Game Awards and sold over two million units in its first six months. Despite ruling out new story content, the developers surprised fans with the announcement of a substantial DLC expansion called Beyond the Dawn during Sony's September 2023 state of play. Now that it's available, fans are eager to know the playtime and whether it justifies the $30 price tag.
How Long Does it Take to Beat Beyond the Dawn?
How Does Beyond the Dawn Compare to Other DLC Expansions?
According to producer Yusuke Tomizawa's post on the PlayStation Blog, players can expect over 20 hours of fresh story content in Beyond the Dawn, provided they take their time. But that's not all. Delving into the game's trophies, we discover that the expansion will come with 40 additional sub-quests, just over half the number found in the base game. If completing all 70 original Tales of Arise sub-quests usually takes around 16 hours, completing the ones in the DLC expansion would likely take around nine hours. With all this in mind, Beyond the Dawn is set to deliver a total of approximately 30 hours of entertainment.
In addition to Tales of Arise, another JRPG that received a significant DLC expansion years after its initial release is Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. At the beginning of 2023, the game was treated to a second season pass, known as Season Pass 2. This new season pass consists of three smaller expansions, with the first two being fully completable in approximately three hours each. If the third expansion follows suit upon its release, it would mean that players would be paying $39.99 for a total of around nine hours of additional content. This translates to roughly $4.44 per hour of gameplay. While Beyond the Dawn might be slightly shorter than what Tomizawa suggests, it offers better value for money as it is priced $10 lower.

As a passionate fan of Tales of Arise, I was thrilled to hear about the announcement of the Beyond the Dawn DLC. The main game captivated me with its immersive storyline and lovable characters, and I couldn't wait to dive back into that world. The promise of over 20 hours of fresh story content was particularly exciting, as it meant I would have the chance to spend even more time with the characters I had grown to love.
Upon its release, I eagerly purchased the DLC and dedicated a significant portion of my time to experiencing all it had to offer. The new story content did not disappoint, delivering an engaging narrative that expanded upon the events of the main game and provided satisfying closure to certain character arcs. The additional sub-quests also added depth to the world-building and gave me the opportunity to further explore the vibrant environments of Dahna and Rena.
