A prominent character from Fast X is set to make an appearance in the latest spinoff centered around Luke Hobbs. After Dwayne Johnson's cameo in Fast X's post-credits scene as Hobbs, the actor took to Twitter to announce that a brand-new spinoff film featuring the character is in the works, prior to the release of Fast 11. This spinoff, titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes according to a listing from Production Weekly, will primarily explore the rivalry between Luke Hobbs and Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes, which was hinted at in the Fast X post-credits scene. While details about the spinoff are scarce, such as a release date or the involvement of any filmmakers, the reported title suggests that Reyes will be returning to the franchise before Fast 11.
Hobbs & Reyes Proves The Fast Saga Doesn't Want to End
Despite the underperformance of Fast X at the box office, Universal is moving forward with additional installments in the main Fast Saga, as well as two announced spinoffs. Initially, the Fast Saga was set to conclude with two films, Fast X and Fast 11, scheduled for release on April 4, 2025. However, Vin Diesel has strongly suggested that it was instead reworked as a trilogy before the announcement of Hobbs & Reyes.
Now, it appears that the Fast & Furious franchise is having difficulty bidding farewell, as it adds another spinoff that pairs Johnson and Momoa together, rather than incorporating them into the second part of the trilogy as originally planned. In addition to Hobbs & Reyes, a spinoff centered around female characters is also in development, although it has not been officially announced and has only been discussed. If Fast X had generated significant revenue in theaters, it would have been logical to expand the franchise with more entries.
Fast & Furious has seen a decline in its performance with each subsequent installment following Hobbs & Shaw. Despite F9 being released during the COVID-19 pandemic and a time of reduced theater attendance, Fast X has performed even worse at the global box office. The fact that the film was made available on VOD just three weeks after its theatrical release indicates Universal's lack of confidence in its success. However, considering the immense star power of Momoa and Johnson, Hobbs & Reyes has the potential to surpass the underwhelming performance of Fast X.
