Kelly Clarkson dismissed rumors of any animosity between her and Carrie Underwood during her recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. The 41-year-old original American Idol winner addressed the topic of Underwood, 40, and promptly refuted any claims of a feud.
"I believe I understand the direction you're taking," she interrupted, cutting off the caller mid-question. "It seems as though people often compare us, even though we haven't had the chance to truly get to know one another."
Clarkson emphasized that she has only crossed paths with the "Cowboy Casanova" singer on a few occasions throughout the years, stating, "There is no animosity or conflict between us. In fact, there is no connection whatsoever. We are simply unfamiliar with each other."
Continuing the viewer's feedback, Clarkson quickly recognized the question had no correlation with a potential conflict. With a playful stride towards Andy Cohen's clubhouse bar, she voiced her thoughts, "You know, I'm always bombarded with the question of being pitted against each other. I don't understand why they only ask that with women. They don't do the same with men."
Contrary to the expected inquiry, the Voice coach was pleasantly surprised by a different topic. They inquired about her experience having Underwood as a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show in December 2020. Overflowing with enthusiasm, Clarkson exclaimed, "It was absolutely amazing! Having her on the show was a fantastic experience."
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Underwood’s appearance on the daytime show took place via Zoom. “I’d love to have her there in person,” Clarkson added.
Kelly Clarkson and the country artist both began their careers on Idol, with Clarkson winning the inaugural season in 2002 and Underwood being crowned during season 4 in 2005.
In 2018, despite their supposed rivalry in the industry, the two singers showed support for each other on Twitter. Responding to a fan poll asking if they were on "Team Kelly Clarkson" or "Team Carrie Underwood," the Texas native expressed that they both were winning in life and blessed. Clarkson further encouraged Underwood, referring to them as "Ambitious Blondes."
The singer of "Before He Cheats" responded with a positive message, stating that she had voted for the person. She expressed her desire for people to celebrate women's success without creating competition between them.
During her appearance on WWHL, Clarkson shared her thoughts on her experience on Idol, suggesting that some celebrities were not friendly towards her after her victory in 2002. Although she chose not to disclose their names, she playfully mentioned that many of them ended up participating in shows similar to the one she came from. This highlights the influence of money in surprising ways.
Clarkson was unable to recall a winner from the past five years when questioned. Her expression turned blank as she confessed, "Oh s–t. ... No, I don't know."
