Kelly Clarkson turned to therapy to cope with her troubled marriage to ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. Despite finding solace in singing about her divorce, therapy did not come cheap for the 41-year-old "Since You've Been Gone" singer. In an interview with ET Canada, Clarkson revealed that she had been regularly attending therapy sessions even before her marriage ended, acknowledging that it was a new experience for her.
Seeing a therapist was a pivotal moment for Clarkson after her 2020 breakup from the talent manager. It provided her with valuable tools to navigate challenging situations and offered an outside perspective from someone who solely focused on the present. This support, combined with her love for music and a supportive group of friends, has been therapeutic for her during tough times.
After getting married in 2013, Kelly Clarkson, host of The Kelly Clarkson Show, and her ex-husband Blackstock had two children together, daughter River Rose, 8, and son Remington, 7. However, in June 2020, Clarkson filed for divorce, leading to a contentious legal battle over their assets and custody of their children. Finally, in March 2022, the divorce was finalized, with Clarkson agreeing to pay Blackstock a one-time sum of $1.3 million and $115,000 per month in spousal support until January 2024. Additionally, she will provide $45,601 each month in child support until their children reach adulthood. As part of the agreement, Clarkson was granted primary custody of their kids, while Blackstock will have monthly visitation rights.
Throughout her legal battle, Clarkson sought solace in music. Last month, she unveiled Chemistry, her 10th studio album, which delves into her tumultuous relationship with Blackstock and their messy separation. The talented "Because of You" singer shared with ET on Monday that she often finds herself crafting her finest songs during trying times, but she aimed to avoid fixating solely on one emotion in her latest record.
She explained that the album captures a range of emotions, including anger, sadness, happiness, and hope. The title of the album reflects the idea that even though chemistry can sometimes be detrimental to a relationship, it is still an incredible and uncontrollable force. She believes that it's important to view a relationship as not solely negative, but also acknowledge the positive aspects. She encourages listeners to remember the good things and not solely focus on the bad.
