Fans on social media are divided over the casting choice of Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern in James Gunn's upcoming DCU movie, "Gods and Monsters." Fillion, known for his collaboration with Gunn, has been a part of previous Gunn projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad. However, opinions on Fillion's role in Superman: Legacy vary, with some supporters commending Gunn's unconventional choice while others remain skeptical. See some of the tweets below:
Animesempai0 thinks that Gardner should have his own movie and questions whether Fillion is too old for the role. Despite this, the tweet ends on a positive note, expressing optimism about Gunn's ability to bring a unique Superman movie to the audience.
Jack McBryan from The Direct commends Gunn for choosing Gardner as the first Green Lantern in his DC titles, suggesting that Gunn is breaking free from conventional storytelling.
James Preston Poole believes that casting Fillion as Gardner is a highly misguided choice.
Dimadude64 eagerly anticipated the live-action Green Lanterns and Fillion's portrayal of Gardner, but ultimately felt let down when the Greg Berlanti series didn't come to fruition.
J.A. Prentice does not believe that casting Gardner as Green Lantern is inherently negative, but found it "so predictable." However,
Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Casting Was Inevitable
instead of Gardner, expected Fillion to portray Hal Jordan. As mentioned earlier, it was inevitable that Fillion would be cast as Green Lantern. Not only has he previously played Hal Jordan in the DC Animated Movie Universe, but he is also a close friend and frequent collaborator of Gunn's. Fillion has appeared in each of Gunn's films, either in a cameo or a supporting role. Even when Gunn felt that he didn't have a suitable cameo for Fillion in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he still found a way to include him in the project through the character of Simon Williams, who appears in fictitious movie posters that unfortunately didn't make it into the final cut.
With Gunn at the helm of the DC Universe reboot, it was evident that Fillion would be incorporated in some capacity. The specifics of his character's storyline in "Superman: Legacy" will remain undisclosed until the film draws nearer, but Fillion is undeniably well-suited for the role. Gardner could potentially introduce Kal-El/Superman (played by David Corenswet) to the Green Lanterns, hinting at their significance in the broader DCU before Hal Jordan and John Stewart make their much-anticipated debut on Max's Lanterns TV series.
Whether Gardner's presence in "Superman: Legacy" holds significant weight or is merely a brief appearance has yet to be determined. However, considering Fillion's previous DCEU character met an untimely demise in the opening sequence of "The Suicide Squad," it's reasonable to expect him to have a more substantial role in Gunn's DCU vision. Only time will reveal the exact involvement of Gardner and the Green Lanterns in Superman's introduction to the DCU when "Superman: Legacy" hits theaters.
