According to Variety, Chiarello was undergoing treatment at Queen of the Valley Medical Center due to an acute allergic reaction, which ultimately led to anaphylactic shock. Gruppo Chiarello, his company, issued a statement confirming these details.
"We express our heartfelt sorrow over the passing of our beloved patriarch, Michael. His exceptional culinary talent, limitless imagination, and unwavering dedication to family were the essence of his character. He brought individuals together through the delight of communal dining, cultivating enduring memories at the table."
The statement further conveyed, "While coping with this profound loss, we treasure the precious moments we shared with him, whether in his culinary realms or within our hearts. His legacy will eternally thrive through the love he infused into every delicacy and the enthusiasm he instilled in all of us to appreciate life's diverse tastes."

In 1985, he received the Chef of the Year title from Food & Wine magazine. Following this accomplishment, he proceeded to establish his inaugural restaurant, Tra Vigne, in Napa Valley, merely two years thereafter.
By the dawn of the next decade, he was honored with the Chef of the Year Award by the Culinary Institute of America. Subsequently, he expanded his culinary ventures by introducing two additional restaurants in Napa Valley — namely, Bottega and Ottimo. Furthermore, he extended his presence to San Francisco's Pier 5 with the opening of Coqueta. In 1999, he embarked on the creation of Chiarello Family Vineyards.
In 2016, two of his employees at Coqueta accused Chiarello of sexual harassment. The lawsuits were resolved the following year, as reported by SF Gate.
"Chef Michael Chiarello's love for food and zest for life will forever be remembered in our kitchens and hearts. As we mourn the loss of Michael, we also commemorate his lasting legacy through his restaurants - Bottega, Coqueta (San Francisco and Napa Valley), and Ottimo," his partners in Gruppo Chiarello stated. "In his memory, we invite you to join us in celebrating his extraordinary journey and the profound impact he made on the world of food, wine, and family. Share a meal with your loved ones and friends, reminding us all that the connections formed over a meal are among life's most valuable treasures."
