Community star Yvette Nicole Brown responds to negative comments about her character, Shirley Bennett, labeling them as "unnecessarily cruel." As one of the original cast members, Shirley was a mainstay on the show for its first five seasons. Despite her departure during the fifth season, Brown made a guest appearance in the sixth season of Community.
Over the weekend, Brown took to Instagram to share a message she received, expressing the sender's wish that she would not be part of the forthcoming Community movie on Peacock. Please refer to her post below for more details.
According to the user, Shirley is the most disliked character in the sitcom. In her response, the actor bluntly addresses the criticism:
Despite my efforts to improve, the negative audience continues to hold me down. I want to make it clear that I couldn't care less about Dim-Dim or anyone else's opinion on Shirley or any of my other characters. It's important to remember that these characters are fictional. It's ridiculous to take it seriously!
It is an honor for me. Clearly, the individual has no significant issues.
Moreover, there is a former president who has faced impeachment twice, has been accused of sexual assault, and is now running for office again. Surprisingly, one-third of the population intends to vote for him. There are far more pressing matters in the world than my actions as a television character over a decade ago.
Who.
Cares.
It is perplexing to me that someone would purposefully go out of their way to behave in a foolishly unpleasant manner towards a stranger, presuming that the stranger cares at all.
I am a fully grown and mature individual, who also happens to be a Black woman in America. What exactly do they expect me to do? Shed tears... over a television program?!
Naw, son! You gon’ get this #YoMama playa! #ECforLife!!!
Is Yvette Nicole Brown Returning For The Community Movie?
The upcoming movie will feature several original actors from Community. Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong will all reprise their respective leading roles as Jeff, Annie, Abed, Britta, Craig, and Ben Chang. Series creator Dan Harmon has confirmed that Donald Glover is open to returning as Troy Barnes, which has been supported by other reports. While it is known that Chevy Chase will not be in the film, the status of Yvette Brown remains unclear.
Brown has expressed her support for a Community movie, stating her desire to see it come to fruition. Unfortunately, the project has experienced delays due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, which has resulted in a postponement of filming. It is anticipated that more casting announcements will be made once production resumes.
The highly anticipated Community movie appears to be finally happening, thanks to the unwavering dedication of its passionate fanbase. However, it is evident that Brown has little tolerance for unnecessary hostility that can sometimes arise from this same passion. While the characters in the dark comedy were intentionally flawed, it is important to remember that the actors should not be blamed for their portrayals of these roles.
