Stray, the award-winning video game, is getting an animated film adaptation due to its compelling story and popularity.
Annapurna Animation, the studio responsible for Netflix's Nimona, has announced their intention to venture into the world of video game adaptations. Their first project will be the comedy Stray, which revolves around a cat and a robot buddy. While Stray may not have the same level of popularity as iconic franchises like Mario or Sonic, its emphasis on storytelling within the gameplay makes it an ideal candidate for adaptation. Fans can look forward to this exciting endeavor.
A year after its release, Stray, an award-winning video game, is currently being actively developed into an animated adaptation. In this game, players assume the role of a lost stray cat in an underground city inhabited solely by robots and mutant bacteria.
At The Game Awards, Stray was recognized as the Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game, in addition to receiving nominations for four other awards, including Game of the Year. Given its captivating storyline, despite the unique concept of playing as a stray cat, it is only fitting that Stray is now being considered for a film or TV adaptation.
It was first reported by Entertainment Weekly that Annapurna Animation, the studio responsible for Netflix's Nimona, intends to capitalize on their recent success by launching a new phase of movies. As part of this initiative, they plan to adapt projects from their video game division, Annapurna Interactive. Stray has been chosen as the first video game adaptation, with studio executives Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein stating in an interview with EW that they selected it because "it is just wildly popular."
During the interview, Baird and Millstein discussed the central focus and challenges of the film. They described it as a buddy comedy featuring a cat and a robot, highlighting the hilarious dynamic between them. Interestingly, the movie does not include any human characters, which Baird believes contributed to the game's immense popularity. He mentioned the unique perspective of seeing the world through an adorable cat's eyes and expressed both excitement and concern about achieving the same effect in the film.
As an animated film adaptation, Stray may seem like an unconventional choice. Unlike well-established franchises like Mario or Sonic, which had to wait years for a successful adaptation, Stray lacks the same level of recognition. However, its emphasis on storytelling rather than gameplay makes it an ideal candidate for an adaptation. While capturing the charm of playing Stray may pose challenges, the game's strong narrative foundation makes it a compelling choice.
Stray fans can expect to be thrilled about the upcoming film adaptation, while enthusiasts of other Annapurna Interactive games should stay tuned for upcoming film adaptation announcements.
