The utilization of AI to replace actors has the potential to jeopardize the incomes of working actors, thereby impacting the future of television series such as Stranger Things.
News of the Stranger Things writers resuming their work is comforting for fans of the show, despite the absence of specific details regarding the storyline.
The Stranger Things writers recently provided an update on the final farewell of Netflix's flagship show. However, there is a caveat.
Currently, Stranger Things has encountered obstacles that need to be resolved before it can officially begin production. The entertainment industry has been rocked by a massive dual strike in recent months, with both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA taking action due to the impact of streaming services. This has made it exceedingly difficult to sustain a livelihood in the industry. On September 27th, the WGA came to an agreement with the AMPTP, allowing shows to finally enter production in terms of writing. However, SAG has yet to finalize their negotiations and is contemplating striking in the realm of video games.
The Stranger Things writers may have been inspired to provide an update on season 5 of the Netflix series. On Twitter, @strangerwriters expressed the hope for a fair deal with SAG, otherwise suggesting that season 5 may be affected. Alongside the tweet was a motion graphic resembling Joe Keery, known for playing fan-favorite Steve Harrington. In addition, they shared that the graphic was a preview for a scene in episode 1, giving viewers a glimpse of season 5. The writers jokingly mentioned that Joe was expected to perform the scene exactly as shown.
Given the circumstances, this update is unexpected. Stranger Things is Netflix's most popular streaming show and has a history of keeping information confidential. While no plot details were revealed, any news is better than none. The fact that the Stranger Things writers are back at work is reassuring.
SAG and producers not reaching an agreement can have grave consequences. Despite the writers' ability to produce numerous scripts, it would be fruitless without actors to portray the characters. The main concern revolves around the utilization of AI as a substitute for actors, which poses a serious threat to their livelihood in the acting industry.
If a production company is able to hire an actor for a single day, duplicate their appearance, and utilize it without compensating the performer in the future, the necessity for actors would be eliminated. Not only would audiences be deprived of witnessing the talents of actors like Keery or Maya Hawke, even if the character Robin Buckley were to meet her demise, but unique shows like Stranger Things would become extinct in our lifetime.
Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are streaming on Netflix.
