Three major cast members have been added to the lineup of a new Stephen King adaptation. The film will be based on King's short story "The Life of Chuck" from his anthology book "If It Bleeds." Directed by Mike Flanagan, who has a history of bringing King's work to the screen, the movie began production earlier this month under an interim agreement due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Previous casting news included Mark Hamill and Tom Hiddleston as the stars. According to Deadline, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Jacob Tremblay have been cast in undisclosed roles for "The Life of Chuck." Ejiofor is known for his work in "12 Years A Slave" and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Baron Mordo. Gillan, also a Marvel alum, recently appeared as Nebula in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy. Tremblay previously worked with Flanagan and will star in the upcoming Toxic Avenger remake alongside Peter Dinklage.
What Is The Life of Chuck?
Flanagan, who previously directed Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, has developed a collaborative rapport with King in recent years. Currently, he is simultaneously involved in the development of The Life of Chuck and a fresh television series adaptation of The Dark Tower. During their work on the latter project, Flanagan proposed the idea of transforming The Life of Chuck into a film. Initially, King rejected the notion, but after being persuaded, he agreed to proceed. Flanagan assured King that if granted the opportunity to bring the story to life onscreen, it would potentially be his finest cinematic achievement.
Beginning with Chuck dying from a brain tumor and moving backwards to his childhood, the story is narrated in reverse chronological order. It is divided into three acts, each revealing different facets of the character. The role of Chuck has been confirmed for Hiddleston, while Tremblay may portray him during his childhood. Hamill's role as Chuck's grandfather Albie is also confirmed. Flanagan's approach to the project remains to be seen, but King's trust in him, despite initial apprehension, is a positive sign. The director wasted no time in developing a script over a single weekend, showcasing his unwavering passion for the film. With an impressive cast like this, it's difficult to envision it not being a success.
