Bethesda may have some surprises in store for Starfield players, as it seems that the player character will have access to magical-looking abilities. Despite the recent 40-minute Starfield Direct showcase covering customization, exploration, progression, and interaction features, the game's scope still appears to be vast and enigmatic, as is typical of Bethesda games. One particular ability was showcased without any further explanation, adding to the game's mystery.
During the Starfield showcase, Bethesda revealed a player ability that appeared to be lifted straight out of Star Wars. Without the use of any gadgets or technology, the player character lifted their left hand and levitated an entire hallway of Crimson Pirates, leaving them powerless. This particular clip is noteworthy because all other abilities shown thus far have been grounded in the game's technology, making this sequence stand out from a lore perspective. It's possible that this ability may be related to the strange alien artifacts that players will be searching for during the main quest. From a mechanical standpoint, the ability is reminiscent of the Dragonborn Shout abilities from The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, indicating that Bethesda may be adding more complexity to the game's combat system.
The similarities between Starfield's abilities and those found in Star Wars or The Elder Scrolls' Dragonborn lore may just be a coincidence, but they are intriguing nonetheless. Given that Starfield is being developed using the same engine as Skyrim, it's possible that implementing magical abilities into the game was a straightforward process. It remains to be seen what Bethesda has in store for players come September, but these abilities are sure to be useful when facing off against Starfield's version of Oblivion's Adoring Fan. And with a modding community sure to emerge, fans can likely expect a Force push straight out of Star Wars to make an appearance eventually.
Starfield releases on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
