Developer Starbreeze Studios is actively striving to reduce the game's reliance on online services in response to player concerns. Following recent updates and fixes for Payday 3, developer Starbreeze Studios is actively exploring solutions to reduce the game's reliance on online services in the future. While the game has faced backlash and received predominantly negative reviews on Steam, Starbreeze remains committed to addressing player concerns and is working alongside its partners to enhance server stability.
The ongoing server problems experienced in the bank heist simulator, Payday 3, have resulted in unfavorable reviews. Criticisms have been directed not only towards the server issues but also the limited content compared to previous installments in the Payday series. Despite offering cross-play progression between PC and console, players have faced significant difficulties logging in, progressing, and carrying out successful heists. At present, Payday 3 on Steam holds a relatively low positive review rating of 32%.
In an attempt to address the concerns of disgruntled Payday 3 players regarding the reliance on online services, Starbreeze has issued a statement assuring that it is actively exploring ways to reduce the game's dependence on these services as part of its long-term vision for the game. The company has recently implemented a new version of its matchmaking server software on a global scale, resulting in improved server performance across all platforms. However, a software update implemented by Starbreeze's partner on September 24 caused a reemergence of instability in the matchmaking infrastructure, which had not been reported during the Technical Beta or Early Access phases of Payday 3.
Starbreeze attributed the current issues in Payday 3 to a significant increase in player numbers, with a peak of 218,250 players across all platforms during the game's launch weekend. As a result, Starbreeze is considering a new partner for matchmaking services to address the influx and server problems. While it remains uncertain how the company will reduce its reliance on these online services, Starbreeze promised to provide updates on the Payday 3 server status through social media.
Despite being rated at 32%, Payday 3's reception is nowhere near as critical as NBA 2K24 or Overwatch 2. Nevertheless, the negative response to the game and the server issues have raised concerns among players about the future of the series. Only time will reveal how Starbreeze and its partners will work to salvage the game.
Payday 3 is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
