Screen Rant: Let's talk a little bit about that infamous day, June 23rd. How did you find out about your show getting canceled?

Aaron J. Waltke: We actually discovered the news at the same time as you did. It wasn't something we planned, as you can imagine. Our focus was on promoting season 2, which was scheduled for release during the winter period and such. So it definitely caught all of us by surprise. The current streaming landscape is going through a significant transition, and everyone is trying to figure out the best way for their shows to thrive and continue. The hope with finding a new streaming platform for Prodigy is that we can introduce our show to a wider range of audiences who may not have had the chance to watch it before. It's all about embracing that Star Trek optimism in real life.

Absolutely. Is there any information you can share regarding season 2?

Aaron J. Waltke stated that season 2 of the show will be an incredible adventure. CBS Studios has shown full confidence in the project, allowing us to continue production. Currently, 11 episodes are already completed, and we aim to finish the remainder by the end of the year according to schedule.

In the first season, the focus was on the aspiration of finding a new life within Starfleet and the Federation. However, this season presents a new dynamic as we are now fully integrated into the Federation. We must navigate the intricacies of Starfleet and abide by its regulations and rules. This adjustment is relatable to anyone experiencing a coming-of-age story, similar to the transition from middle school to high school. It's like going from being a big fish in a small pond to being thrown into the vast ocean.

On top of that, there are numerous loose ends from the conclusion of season 1. The most significant unresolved issue revolves around the aftermath of their discoveries about Solum. Asencia remains at large, adding to the weight on Gwen's shoulders. She now bears the burden of knowledge that her civilization is poised for an impending catastrophe unless she takes action. Determined to avert disaster, Gwen embarks on a quest to find a solution, leading to a cascade of complex complications. Season 2 holds great anticipation for enthusiasts of time travel, Starfleet aficionados, and fans of science fiction in general.

You recently tweeted about an episode that incorporates the entire franchise. Can you elaborate on what you meant?

Aaron J. Waltke: I wish I could explain it without violating any confidentiality agreements. What I can say is that various elements from every Star Trek show are interconnected, including elements from shows we are currently collaborating with. Perhaps even Starfleet Academy. There are intriguing storylines from other shows that intertwine, along with exceptional performances from our cast and potentially some familiar faces.

And I want to clarify something, actually, that does come up from time to time: that your show is canon.

Aaron J. Waltke: Yes.

And so is Lower Decks. All animated Star Trek shows are canon. And that's what the Strange New Worlds crossover establishes, especially at the end.

Aaron J. Waltke: Absolutely.

Animation is not its own world or dimension. It is actually a medium that can be integrated and influenced by other shows, like the one Terry Matalas is working on. There are aspects and ideas that we discussed and shared, some of which you may have already seen in other shows without realizing it. Our shows draw inspiration from reputable sources and aim to not only blend and intersect with other content but also to enrich and pay tribute to those sources. Working within the realm of Star Trek allows us to explore and experiment in a truly remarkable and exciting way.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Strange New Worlds crossover, as I'm certain you did too. While watching it, the idea dawned on me that Prodigy, when considering its DNA, essentially incorporates a crossover with Voyager.

Aaron J. Waltke expressed that the initial concept of Prodigy was to begin in an unfamiliar setting and gradually transition towards the familiar world of Star Trek. Captain Janeway was chosen as the ideal character to lead a group of non-Federation individuals and mold them into a Starfleet crew. However, the intention was not solely to continue the story of Voyager, but rather to extend the narrative of the entire Star Trek universe. This allowed the show to gradually unfold and incorporate elements from other Star Trek series. Additionally, the potential for the characters to appear in the early 25th century in Star Trek: Legacy is an exciting prospect, particularly envisioning Dal as a 30-year-old.

I would be thrilled to witness the ragtag crew's adventures in the 25th century. Terry is a devoted fan of the show and also a close friend of mine, so the possibilities are endless. After the Strange New Worlds crossover, my final question is: which show do you envision Prodigy crossing paths with?

Aaron J. Waltke expressed his desire to see all Star Trek crews cross over with Enterprise. He also mentioned his interest in having crossovers with The Original Series (TOS) crew, which has already been done to some extent. Having watched enough Star Trek, he believes that the possibilities for a crossover are endless.
