Oh Yeong-Su, the star of Squid Game, has been convicted of sexual misconduct. A district court judge in South Korea made the ruling on Friday, March 16. Yeong-Su, who is 79 years old, was found guilty of inappropriately touching an actress in 2017. This included hugging her, holding her hand, and kissing her cheek. As reported by The New York Times, Yeong-Su will receive an eight-month suspended sentence and will be required to attend 40 hours of sexual violence classes.
Yeong-Su announced on Friday his intention to appeal the verdict, despite previously denying the charges. The accusations arose in November 2022 when an actress reported that Yeong-Su had touched her inappropriately. Originally, the woman had filed a complaint in late 2021, but Yeong-Su refuted the claims and the police closed the case without pressing any charges. However, at the victim's request, the prosecution decided to reopen the case.
During the trial, the judge mentioned that the woman had undergone sexual violence counseling back in 2018. It was noted that it was Yeong-Su's international fame from the hit show "Squid Game" on Netflix, three years later, that prompted her to demand an apology from him.
Yeong-su shared a statement with Korean broadcaster JTBC, explaining that he simply held someone's hand to help them navigate around the lake. He apologized, but clarified that apologizing does not mean he is admitting to any wrongdoing.
The actor gained popularity in 2021 for his role as Player No. 001 on the first season of Squid Game. Yeong-su made history in January 2022 by becoming the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a series, miniseries, or television film.
Netflix has decided to bring back Squid Game for another season, but Yeong-su will not be part of it.
The popular South Korean series features 465 people who are all facing overwhelming debt. They are taken to a secluded island where they must compete in children's games in hopes of winning $38 million. However, there's a deadly twist - those who lose the games are immediately killed.
Show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously told Vanity Fair in May 2022 what fans can expect from the next season.

Oh Yeong-Su believes that humanity will face a test through the games once more. He suggests that the way the games are played could change. If the players could communicate and work together, there might have been more winners. Yeong-Su wonders if true solidarity among humans is achievable.
During a Netflix interview, Dong-hyuk expressed feeling pressure to improve the second season. He mentioned, "I understand that many fans have loved the series, but our goal is to make it even more enjoyable for the worldwide audience."
