At Square Enix's recent shareholder meeting, a Xenogears fan raised the question of whether a remaster of the beloved cult classic RPG could be a possibility. Over the years, Square Enix has released numerous remaster collections and even remakes of other cult classics like Star Ocean: The Second Story R and Live A Live. However, Xenogears, another widely cherished cult classic, has been neglected in terms of remasters or ports for quite some time. Despite its initial struggle to gain popularity compared to Final Fantasy 7, Xenogears remains highly esteemed by fans and critics alike. The demand for anything related to Xenogears is still very much evident, as demonstrated by the interest expressed by one of Square Enix's shareholders.
During a recent Square Enix shareholders meeting, shareholders had the opportunity to pose questions to Square Enix staff, including Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Takashi Kiryu, the president of Square Enix. One shareholder asked about the possibility of remastering other past titles, specifically mentioning Xenogears, in light of the success of the Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remaster series. The president, in a non-committal manner, declined to share any information about new games but indicated that the company is exploring various options. He also encouraged shareholders to anticipate future announcements. While the president's response provided no clear answer to the shareholder's question, it is worth noting that there exists a demand for a Xenogears port, with fans hopeful that Square Enix's track record of remakes and remasters may one day extend to this cult classic RPG.
Although Xenogears never received a direct sequel, its director, Tetsuya Takahashi, achieved success with the spiritual successor series Xenosaga and later the Xenoblade Chronicles series published by Nintendo. If a remaster of Xenogears were to be made, there is a hope that the original director and Monolith Soft would be involved in the game's remake or remastering. Xenogears was originally released on the PS1 in 1998.
