Spoilers lie ahead for Episode 1 of "Follow Papa and Mama," the second season of Spy x Family, currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
In the Fall of 2023, the much-awaited return of the side-splitting fake-family comedy has arrived. The Forger family is back with even more uproarious misadventures, as they navigate the challenges of maintaining their facade while harboring deep secrets. This new season promises to deliver the same level of laughter and entertainment as its predecessor.
An Unfortunate Mishap
The second season commences with a manga bonus chapter, omitted from the first season. A testament to the show's enduring charm, it exudes laughter just as delightfully as ever. Wit Studio and CloverWorks' stellar animation effortlessly captivates, and despite a slightly more restrained episode this week, it remains an exceptional introduction to the new season.Under the cover of darkness, Yor successfully carries out a mission to eliminate the extremist group, the Red Circus. However, as she lowers her guard to report her success to her superior, one of her targets, still conscious, surprises her and shoots her in the buttocks. Upon returning, despite her best efforts to conceal her pain from Loid and Anya, it becomes evident to them both that she is deeply distressed, as reflected by the visible grimace etched across her face. Misinterpreting the situation, Loid assumes that Yor's discontent is directed towards him and hopes that her mood will improve by the next morning.
A Disastrous Date
Regrettably, Yor's agony has intensified, causing Loid to speculate that she is still distressed about something. In a desperate bid to maintain their facade of wedded bliss, Loid proposes that he and Yor embark on a romantic outing. Yor, recalling how her colleagues expressed surprise at their lack of dates, promptly agrees. With his mastery of seduction, Loid spent last night devising numerous date ideas to satiate Yor's happiness. Sadly, their plans are thwarted by Yor's persistent wound. Although Loid initially intended to chauffeur Yor around the city, her discomfort prevents her from sitting for extended periods, necessitating a change in plans - walking instead. Despite this setback, Loid remains resolute in ensuring that today is a triumph.
Against instructions, Anya persuades Franky to accompany her in secretly following Loid and Yor on their date. Despite their attempts to disguise themselves, Loid quickly spots them. However, he decides to overlook their presence in order to focus on Yor's emotional state. Regrettably, most of Loid's choices turn out to be unfavorable for Yor. Her injury prevents her from fully participating in the activities Loid had planned, such as watching a movie at the theater and going for a boat ride.
Anya's Rescue Mission
Feeling completely defeated, Loid escorts Yor to an upscale restaurant for dinner. Since Anya and Franky are unable to join them, the pair opts to head home for the day. However, Anya unexpectedly overhears a waiter identifying Yor as the notorious Thorn Princess, her lethal alter ego. To their astonishment, the waiter happens to be a former member of the Red Circus. Although he had intended to leave his criminal past behind after surviving Yor's attack, coming face to face with her rekindles his desire for vengeance on behalf of his fallen comrades. Recognizing the potential danger of Yor's true identity being exposed to Loid, Anya takes it upon herself to handle the situation. She enlists Franky's assistance in clandestinely entering the restaurant.
As Anya and Franky stealthily make their way into the restaurant through the ventilation system, the waiter executes his initial attempt to assassinate someone by covertly lacing blowfish toxin and presenting it as wine. Unfortunately, Anya is unable to intervene in time to prevent Yor from consuming the poison. Surprisingly, the toxin's impact on Yor is minimal. Instead of harming her, it numbs the sensation of pain from her existing injury, enabling her to focus more on her romantic rendezvous with Loid. Taken aback by this unexpected turn of events, the waiter resorts to assembling an improvised explosive device using materials procured from the storage room. However, Anya outmaneuvers him, laying down traps to obstruct his path to the storage room. Eventually, she incapacitates him with a non-lethal version of the bomb he intended to create, causing a controlled explosion. Asserting her dominance, Anya confronts him, forcing him to abandon his quest for revenge. With the waiter rendered unconscious, she departs from the scene.
