The Mission: Impossible franchise has been going strong for over 25 years, not to mention the TV show that initially inspired it. Since its debut on the big screen in 1996, Mission: Impossible has undergone various changes, while preserving key elements like Tom Cruise's star power and the promise of thrilling action sequences.
The latest installment, Dead Reckoning Part One, excels in honoring those two constants. It capitalizes on the successful formula that has worked wonders in previous movies. The M:I series has essentially cracked the code, to the extent that it feels as though they are created by an algorithm rather than a human writer. This comparison not only aligns with the ongoing discussion about AI's role in the arts but also complements the movie's plot itself.
Alongside the successful elements responsible for the movies' strong appeal, Dead Reckoning also draws inspiration from the factors that hinder them. While the Mission: Impossible franchise often prioritizes action over plot, this tendency becomes more pronounced in its latest installment. Ethan Hunt, portrayed by Cruise, once again embarks on a mission that holds personal significance for him, yet ultimately revolves around obtaining one half of a McGuffin as a means to locate the other half. In this case, these halves together form the key to something significant.
Content: The villains in Mission: Impossible are usually forgettable due to them not being the main focus of the show. However, this time, the main antagonist is an out-of-control AI that has infiltrated computer systems worldwide. The IMF team, consisting of Benji, Luther, Ilsa, and the new member Grace, must locate a key and determine its purpose before the rogue AI, using Gabriel as its human avatar, obtains it.
The stakes are incredibly high, as always, with the fate of the world on the line. There is a significant concern that the rogue AI could instigate a global nuclear war by turning countries against each other. Yet, the personal stakes are what truly matter to Ethan, as he realizes that the AI intends to harm him through his team and friends. The film strikes a good balance between the larger threat and the individual storylines, ensuring that none of the characters are overshadowed. Each character has their moment to shine, even if they aren't performing daring stunts. While some supporting characters may seem unnecessary, such as the government agents portrayed by Shea Wigham and Greg Tarzan Davis, it is still enjoyable to watch them in action.
Pom Klementieff, a newcomer to the series, portrays a henchwoman who is brilliantly deranged. Similarly, Atwell brings forth the same charm and determination that made her portrayal of Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so endearing. Despite their need to cooperate in order to survive and outsmart their mutual foe, Atwell and Cruise's characters clash, creating an instant chemistry. All three actors have the opportunity to showcase their personalities in an extended car chase through Venice, which is both thrilling and comical. Moments of physical humor add excitement to what could have otherwise been a predictable action sequence, similar to those seen in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Atwell and Cruise masterfully deliver these comedic elements.
Returning director Christopher McQuarrie once again showcases his expertise in crafting awe-inspiring setpieces, further solidifying his successful collaboration with Cruise. It is evident that Cruise puts immense effort into ensuring the stunts and action sequences are executed flawlessly. However, McQuarrie's direction falters slightly in the moments when the action subsides. Despite the outstanding performances, some of the dialogue may come across as forced, likely due to its predominantly expository nature. The interactions in Dead Reckoning possess a somewhat pulpy quality, which occasionally fails to hit the mark.
In Dead Reckoning, there is also another aspect that didn't quite work, much like what held back Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The inclusion of "Part One" in the title ruins the surprise. Despite the abundance of fantastic elements in the movie, it doesn't feel like a complete story. There is a lack of closure regarding the events, leaving viewers somewhat dissatisfied with the ending. While there is a glimpse of what's to come, it doesn't seem like any corners were cut in the movie. However, the existence of a second part to the story makes the ending feel more like a setup for the next movie.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning may not be flawless. Nonetheless, with its thrilling action sequences (including a memorable callback to the first movie), fast pace, and strong performances, it has the potential to become a summer hit. In a time of disappointingly lackluster blockbuster films, it's refreshing to witness a classic, crowd-pleasing action thriller filled with tension and excitement. When it comes to summer movies, this is one mission that audiences should definitely embrace.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One opens in theaters on July 12th.
