Fans wondering why there wasn't a new episode of Abbott Elementary this week can catch the show after the 2024 Oscars.
The show's writer and producer, Brittani Nichols, shared the news on Wednesday, March 6, through X, stating, "No new Abbott Elementary tonight because we're airing after the Oscars! Tune in on Sunday." Abbott Elementary will air a new episode on Sunday, March 10, before returning to its regular Wednesday schedule. Another break is scheduled for March 27.
Abbott Elementary, a show that premiered in 2021, centers around teachers at a public school in Philadelphia. In a special post-Oscars episode, the school is designated as a historical landmark. Guest starring in this episode are Jennifer Elise Cox and June Diane Raphael.
The sitcom quickly gained critical acclaim and received numerous awards such as Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. Season 2 begins with Janine (played by Quinta Brunson) taking on a temporary fellowship with the school district after deciding to put a hold on her relationship with Gregory (played by Tyler James Williams) — at least for now.
Before the second season of the show began, co-showrunner Justin Halpern shared a sneak peek of what to expect in the upcoming episodes. In an interview with Decider in April 2023, Halpern revealed that the new season would focus on the topic of charter schools and the challenges they bring. He also mentioned that the first season had explored the struggles of being underfunded. Looking ahead to season 3, Halpern expressed excitement about a unique and never-before-seen idea that has been discussed with Quinta, hinting at an intriguing storyline to come.

In October 2023, show star and creator Brunson confirmed that the third season’s episode count was affected by the duel WGA and SAG strikes.
Brunson, 34, expressed his concerns about losing half a season and half a year. He explained to Decider that the season would still align with the school calendar, but they would not be airing in September like the previous year. Instead, they would focus on what was happening in the school, emphasizing the unique nature of the show.
She mentioned that last season they did 22 episodes, which was a lot of TV for her since she was writing, producing, and starring in it. So, she welcomed the idea of a shorter season as it was exhausting work.
Despite the shortened season, viewers can still look forward to seeing familiar faces on Abbott Elementary as the show continues to cast celebrities as guest stars.
Brunson shared with Entertainment Tonight in February that he appreciates when people see being part of Abbott Elementary as a chance for their kids to watch them on screen. Many actors often star in more serious or mature projects, but Abbott is a show that their children can enjoy seeing them in.
You can catch Abbott Elementary on ABC on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, and it is also available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
