Sony is looking to broaden its gaming ecosystem by venturing into mobile gaming, with its internal studios already working on developing games for the platform. The company has also made strides in the PC gaming space in recent years, although the number of releases has been limited. In a recent announcement, PlayStation Studios confirmed that it will stagger the PC release of PS5 games by two to three years. Additionally, PlayStation is set to make a more aggressive push into cloud gaming, with CEO Jim Ryan revealing that the company will share its plans for growth in this space in the coming months. Ryan acknowledged that cloud gaming and portability are becoming increasingly important to gamers, and Sony and PlayStation are committed to focusing more heavily on these aspects of the industry.
Sony has recently announced that it has devised a mobile strategy to bring some of its most beloved properties to the portable platform. During a recent presentation, the company confirmed that multiple internal studios are currently working on developing mobile games, with Savage Game Studios being the only one specifically mentioned. In addition to developing their own games, Sony is also interested in publishing mobile games. This means they are open to exploring development opportunities with external studios, as well as considering investments and acquisitions.
A chart presented by Sony indicates that mobile games will constitute approximately 5% of its portfolio by 2023, increasing to 10% by 2025. Although these figures are slightly lower than the previous target of 20% mobile games by 2025, as stated in the chart released in August 2022 when Sony acquired Savage Game Studios and announced its expansion plans into mobile, it still suggests that we may expect some exciting mobile game announcements this year.
During the highly anticipated PlayStation Showcase event on May 24, 2023, no mobile games were showcased which leaves fans to wonder how they will react when the first PlayStation mobile games are revealed. However, the announcement of Diablo Immortal could be a good predictor of how fans will respond when Sony confirms that some of their favorite and well-loved franchises will be making the transition to mobile.
To further demonstrate its commitment to mobile gaming, PlayStation has announced its latest offering, Project Q. While not a standalone platform as some had hoped, the device allows for streaming from the PS5 via Remote Play. The Project Q boasts an impressive 8-inch HD screen and features identical to the PS5’s DualSense controller. While little information is currently available about the device, its unveiling has generated a great deal of excitement among fans.
