Sony introduces an exciting addition for PS Plus Premium subscribers, aiming to enhance user satisfaction amidst the recent price hike

Highlights

Sony has announced Sony Pictures Core, a new video streaming service that offers free movie streaming to PS Plus Premium subscribers on PS4 and PS5 consoles.

As part of Sony's recent overhaul of its PlayStation Plus subscription service, the new offering includes a revamped service called PS Plus Premium. Subscribers to PS Plus Premium will now have the advantage of accessing a constantly updated collection of up to 100 movies to stream for free. The current selection includes popular titles such as Looper and Resident Evil Damnation.

Sony has introduced a new video streaming service called Sony Pictures Core, which grants free movies for PS Plus Premium subscribers to enjoy on their PS4 and PS5 consoles. This move can be seen as a direct response to the success of Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass. To enhance the PlayStation Plus service, Sony has reorganized it into three levels: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Each level offers different access to both current-generation and backward compatible games, depending on the subscription. PS Plus was previously considered to be on par with Xbox Game Pass in terms of value, providing benefits such as cloud saves, free monthly games, and a regularly updated selection of titles available for streaming or download. However, this perception of value was diminished when Sony confirmed a price increase for all three PS Plus tiers starting in September, with a significant $40 per year rise for the Premium tier.

But it appears that there might be a rationale behind the increase in prices, after all. Commencing on October 5, PS4 and PS5 users might detect the existence of a new app named Sony Pictures Core being promoted on their gaming consoles. This app will enable individuals who register for a complimentary account to either rent or purchase specific Sony Pictures movies, occasionally presenting the opportunity for early access to films before they are made accessible on other digital retailers. However, for PS Plus Premium subscribers, the offering becomes even more enticing as Sony will provide a constantly rotating selection of up to 100 diverse movies that can be streamed for free.

These movies are offered to watch without any advertisements and there is already a collection accessible to PS Plus Premium members. Some of the movies in this collection include Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation. Additionally, the library of movies available for rental or purchase is even larger with up to 2,000 movies to choose from. Some of the highly acclaimed movies in this extended library are Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted, and The Equalizer.

One of the movies available for early access is Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story. This movie has been digitally available in the US for a while, but it hasn't been accessible in other countries such as the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. For a limited time, those who purchase the movie through the Sony Pictures Core app will also receive a code that grants them 750,000 credits for in-game purchases in Gran Turismo 7 on either PS4 or PS5.

The Sony Pictures Core app is a rebranded version of Bravia Core, familiar to users with Bravia and Xperia devices. Both Bravia Core and Sony Pictures Core can stream HDR movies at a maximum of 80Mbps, equivalent to a 4K UHD Blu-ray. In comparison, other services only offer movie streaming up to 25Mbps. Additionally, the Bravia Core website states that the app provides the largest collection of IMAX Enhanced movies available. This new addition to the perks lineup may help justify the recent price increase for many PS Plus Premium subscribers.
