Sonic Team Unveils Exciting Plans for Shadow the Hedgehog's Epic Comeback

Sonic Team's executive producer expresses keen interest in developing a thrilling new game centered around Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic's iconic red-and-black rival

The executive producer of Sonic Team expressed his desire to bring back Shadow the Hedgehog in a future game, although he will not be appearing in the upcoming Sonic Superstars. This new game aims to take the series back to its roots on the Sega Genesis, offering a 2D platformer experience that focuses on fast-paced obstacle clearing. Sonic Superstars will also include 4-player co-op multiplayer action, with fans being able to choose from Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose as playable characters at launch. The game will feature the classic designs of these characters, as well as the return of Fang the Sniper from Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble and the introduction of a new character named Trip. Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka commented on the possibility of other fan-favorite characters like Shadow the Hedgehog making an appearance.

Despite Shadow's absence from both Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars, Iizuka expressed a desire to create a game involving Sonic's rival in the future. While this is not an official confirmation of plans for a new game featuring Shadow the Hedgehog, it acknowledges the character's popularity among fans. In addition, the second movie in the Sonic film universe hinted at Shadow's appearance through a post-credits stinger, which was also mentioned by Iizuka. The most recent game to feature Shadow as a playable character was Sonic Forces, including its Episode Shadow DLC.

Iizuka explains that the reason for Shadow's absence in Sonic Superstars is because the game is primarily centered around the classic series, and Shadow was introduced much later in Sonic Adventure 2. Additionally, when asked about the possibility of a Sonic Adventure 2 remake, Iizuka expresses his interest in revisiting the title in the future but believes that Sonic Team should prioritize the development of new experiences such as Sonic Frontiers and the aforementioned Superstars.

Sonic Superstars is scheduled to release in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
