Enthusiastic fans have eagerly embraced the series, declaring the characters to be endearing and expressing their desire for additional inclusions.
Sega's recent filing of the Sonic & Friends trademark has unveiled an exciting surprise: a delightful new chibi animated short series, rather than a game. Originally submitted in July of this year, the Sonic trademark continues to make waves.
Remarkably, the IDW comic series maintains its thriving presence after five remarkable years. Additionally, the first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies achieved tremendous success, reshaping opinions on video game film adaptations. Furthermore, the recently concluded Sonic Prime, the sixth animated tie-in series, has just completed its second season out of the promised three. Clearly, Sonic shows no signs of slowing down in terms of side projects and is poised to provide an action-packed 2023 for his devoted fans.
According to Tails' Channel, a well-known fan-operated news source within the fanbase, the trademark was actually associated with a fresh animated series. In contrast to Sonic Prime, which is a serialized action show set in multiple universes and is believed to be part of the official game canon, this series will solely consist of lighthearted shorts that will be shared on Sega's official TikTok page. The shorts will feature a charming chibi art style, giving them an innocent appearance. A sneak peek of the series, lasting 19 seconds, was posted on TikTok. The clip showcased Sonic and his closest companions - Tails, Knuckles, and Amy - as they faced off against their usual antagonist, Dr. Eggman. The character designs have been greatly simplified and reduced in size, reminiscent of the classic era, but still retain some elements of their modern appearances. For example, Amy and Eggman's clothing is similar to their modern designs. The characters' once black eyes now feature subtle accents of their modern coloration.
In the comment section, fans were extremely excited about the series' announcement. They found the redesigned cast to be incredibly adorable and shared their desires for other characters to be included in addition to the confirmed five, such as Vector the Crocodile or Sonic's arch-nemesis Shadow the Hedgehog. Some viewers even mistook the trailer for a preview of another game, possibly a smaller and more straightforward title designed for mobile devices.
Sonic's focus on creating content for the online audience is nothing new. Sega has enlisted fans to contribute to official game projects, shared promotional material on platforms like YouTube and social media, and even launched an online series showcasing its characters with the original voice actors returning. This latest endeavor appears to be another step in this direction, and it will be fascinating to observe its trajectory and duration.
