Oppenheimer's dominance over IMAX screens in the US may have adversely impacted the box office success of Mission: Impossible.
IMAX, in a show of belief in the film's potential, has revealed that Oppenheimer will make a comeback later this year.
Oppenheimer's IMAX run, which was originally planned for three weeks, has now been extended, dealing a significant blow to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which is currently struggling at the box office. Before both films were released, there were reports of Tom Cruise's anger towards Oppenheimer for monopolizing all IMAX screens in the US for the first three weeks. This exclusivity deal between IMAX and Oppenheimer may have been a factor in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's lackluster performance.
In a recent report from Collider, it is revealed that Oppenheimer's IMAX exclusivity deal has been extended for an additional week, further impacting Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's box office earnings. IMAX also stated in a press release that Oppenheimer will be returning to IMAX later in the year. Take a look at IMAX's statement below.
In light of its exceptional success, IMAX has decided to extend the run of OPPENHEIMER by one week, now ending on August 16/17. Additionally, IMAX intends to reintroduce showtimes of OPPENHEIMER in the late summer/fall, as long as there is availability.
Why Oppenheimer Is Getting More Time On IMAX
Since its release on July 21st, Oppenheimer has experienced tremendous success at the box office. As of now, the film has generated an impressive $400.4 million in revenue, surpassing its $100 million budget. This outstanding financial performance has established Oppenheimer as a resounding triumph. Moreover, critics have showered the film with praise, hailing it as the pinnacle of director Christopher Nolan's career.
Oppenheimer's critical and financial success has led IMAX to extend its screening period. As a result, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One continues to struggle, despite earning $448.5 million against a $290 million budget. Surprisingly, Oppenheimer has only made around $48 million more than Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, even though the latter was released 9 days earlier.
However, there might still be hope for the latest Mission: Impossible installment. IMAX has previously responded to Tom Cruise's dissatisfaction by stating that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One could return to IMAX once Oppenheimer's exclusive run is over. Although it remains uncertain how many people would choose to see the film in IMAX weeks after its initial release, there is still a possibility for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One to find success later on. Regardless of the outcome, Oppenheimer's extended IMAX deal ensures its continuous success.
