Bob Geldof revealed that he had been in contact with Sinéad O'Connor shortly before her passing, stating that she was going through a variety of emotions in her last days.
Geldof, a singer-songwriter and cofounder of Live Aid, revealed that he had been exchanging text messages with O'Connor recently. He described the texts as containing a mix of desperation, despair, sorrow, and moments of great happiness. This encapsulated her personality.
O'Connor passed away last week at the age of 56, as confirmed by her family on Wednesday, July 26. "With deep sadness, we announce the heartbreaking news of Sinéad's passing," they stated in a message to RTE. "Her loved ones and close friends are in utter devastation and kindly request privacy during this incredibly challenging time."
The cause of death was not immediately determined, but British authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected. According to the London Metropolitan Police, they received a report of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the city. O'Connor was pronounced dead at the scene. After the discovery, the police informed O'Connor's family. They further mentioned that the death is not being treated as suspicious. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of O'Connor's death.
Before paying his public tribute to O'Connor, Geldof disclosed that he had been acquainted with her from a tender age. Geldof shared that O'Connor had been an avid admirer of his band, the Boomtown Rats.
"Sinéad, who lived just down the road from me and Garry [Roberts], the band's guitar player who sadly passed away around six or seven months ago, was someone we knew for most of her life," Geldof shared with Irish Web TV. "She was a devoted fan of The Rats."
Geldof went on to express that the band's intention was to dedicate their performance at Cavan Calling to O'Connor as a way to honor her memory. "We were close friends from the beginning," he added. "She was signed to the same small record label, managed by the same person, so there was a strong connection there."
