Hideo Kojima, the creator of the iconic Metal Gear Solid series, is being left out of the new credits for Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1.
Konami's choice to minimize Kojima's role in the series could be attributed to their strained relationship during the production of Metal Gear Solid 5. This exclusion of Kojima and other key team members from the updated credits might create division among fans of Metal Gear Solid and give rise to controversy.
Hideo Kojima, the co-creator of the renowned Metal Gear Solid series, has been excluded from the credits of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1. Kojima began his career at Konami's MSX home computer division in 1986, where he played a significant role in the development of the original Metal Gear. This marked the beginning of the highly successful Metal Gear Solid series, which propelled Kojima to fame.
Regrettably, Kojima's relationship with Konami deteriorated during the production of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, which garnered widespread acclaim upon its release in 2015. Despite its success, Konami announced their decision to sever ties with Kojima and his in-house development studio, Kojima Productions, as part of a controversial corporate restructuring shortly before the game's launch. Consequently, Kojima's name was omitted from the marketing materials for both The Phantom Pain and its prequel, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. Since then, Kojima and his team have embarked on new ventures such as Death Stranding and an unnamed exclusive title for Xbox.
It appears that Konami is once again downplaying Hideo Kojima's involvement in the Metal Gear Solid series. Several Twitch streamers who had the opportunity to play Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 prior to its upcoming release this week have reported that Kojima's name is not mentioned in the new credits of the compilation. Instead, the packaging for each game in the Master Collection simply includes a message expressing gratitude to "all original Metal Gear series staff and fans." It should be noted that Kojima and various other members of the original Metal Gear Solid development team are still listed in the individual credits of each game, as they remain unchanged from the original releases.
The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 does not include the names of Hideo Kojima and David Hayter, along with the rest of the voice cast for the remastered entries. Only a generic "thank you" message is given. This disregards the earlier issue faced by the creators of Metroid Prime Remastered, where the original staff was also left unmentioned. While Hideo Kojima is acknowledged in the original credits for each game, his absence from the collection's new credits will surely create further divisions among Metal Gear Solid fans.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 will be released on October 24th for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
