Summary
Showrunner David Jenkins has revealed the truth about Lucius' destiny in "Our Flag Means Death". Following his expulsion from the ship by Blackbeard, Lucius makes a comeback in the second season, sporting a bleaker perspective and exhibiting a more malevolent disposition.
Lucius' brush with death has permanently altered him, leaving behind a legacy of rudeness, impertinence, and indifference, completely deviating from his previously kind-hearted nature showcased in season 1.
The series delves into profound character shifts that heavily impact the individuals involved, and Lucius' transformation is not an isolated case. While being a pirate entails a harsh existence, there remains a glimmer of hope for Lucius to rediscover his compassionate side in the seasons to come.
Showrunner David Jenkins has finally given clarity on the fate of Lucius in Our Flag Means Death. The series revolves around the dramatic relationship between Stede Bonnet and the renowned pirate Blackbeard. In the first season, Stede and Blackbeard were separated, with Blackbeard choosing to cast aside his crewmate, Lucius (played by Nathan Foad), by throwing him off the ship. However, season 2 has revealed a twist in Lucius' fate, bringing the pirate back into the storyline.
As fans eagerly await news of a season 3 renewal for Our Flag Means Death, Jenkins has addressed the fake-out death in an interview with Insider. Jenkins never intended for Lucius to permanently exit the show, but he is enthusiastic about exploring how this experience has transformed the character. After being shocked by the consequences of his kindness, Lucius has embraced a darker and more ruthless persona. Refer to Jenkins' statement below for more insight.
"You can't eliminate Nathan Foad! He's absolutely amazing. I never had any intention of disposing of Lucius. He's the greatest. However, I did enjoy seeing that character meet a violent demise after being so kind to Blackbeard. It was entertaining to bring him back as a slightly damaged version of Lucius, resembling an 'angry young man.' And I believe Nathan had a great time portraying that."
The Inevitable Change In Lucius
After the conclusion of season 1 of When Our Flag Means Death, Lucius found himself in a precarious situation. Throughout multiple episodes, he had supported Ed and assisted him in his journey towards personal growth. However, to Lucius's dismay, Ed subjected him to a painful act of betrayal. With the intention to embrace his own darker nature, Ed forcefully propelled Lucius into the depths of the ocean. As the season reached its end, it seemed that Lucius had met his demise. Fortunately, season 2 introduced the return of the intellectual pirate.
After experiencing a near-death incident, like Lucius did, one's life is likely to be permanently altered. Lucius, filled with anger due to mistreatment, has completely rejected the kind-hearted tendencies that once drove him to assist Stede and Ed in cultivating their relationship. Consequently, he has transformed into a rude, insolent, and indifferent individual. This newfound persona, forged through his experiences, possesses a darker undertone that may linger with him indefinitely.
Although the show primarily embraces comedy, it also delves into profound character developments such as these, which can immensely impact the story. Lucius is not alone in this transformation, as both Ed and Stede have also undergone shifts in their personal perspectives. Life as a pirate entails severe hardships and agony; however, pirates must unite to provide mutual support. While Our Flag Means Death has altered Lucius, there is a possibility that he will strive to regain his kindness in future seasons.
