Shocking Twist: The 8 Republican Defectors Who Dethroned McCarthy as House Speaker

A historic vote witnessed eight Republican House members join Democrats in ousting Kevin McCarthy as House speaker, marking a significant shift in political dynamics

A group of eight House Republicans joined with Democrats Tuesday in a historic vote to remove Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

The House will now have to elect a new speaker.

The motion to vacate in the House of Representatives resulted in a 216-210 vote, with Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz spearheading the endeavor. Due to the narrow majority held by the GOP in the House and the unified opposition from the Democratic conference, McCarthy required the backing of almost all his party members to retain the gavel.

The successor to the California Republican remains unknown at this time, and GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina has been appointed as the interim speaker.

Here are the House Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy:

Andy Biggs of Arizona

Ken Buck of Colorado

Tim Burchett of Tennessee

Eli Crane of Arizona

Matt Gaetz of Florida

Bob Good of Virginia

Nancy Mace of South Carolina

Matt Rosendale of Montana
