The arrival of Ultimate Spider-Man has brought about significant changes, with the most impactful occurring early on and laying the groundwork for a completely new Spider-Man. Fans have eagerly anticipated the arrival of the new Ultimate Spider-Man.
Longtime Spider-Man enthusiasts have been voicing their disappointment with the direction of the 616-universe Spider-Man for some time now. They are unhappy with the insistence on preventing Spider-Man and Mary Jane from reuniting, and the endless cycle of sorrow and anguish that characterizes his narratives.
The Ultimate Universe offers a welcome departure from this, featuring an older, contentedly married Peter who embraces his powers as an adult. Yet, the most unexpected change in the new Ultimate universe is one that fans likely did not see coming.
Warning, spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #1 follow
Ultimate Spider-Man revives an important Marvel character, and fans are shocked
The preview of Ultimate Spider-Man has already captivated fans with its opening pages. However, it's Peter's life at the Daily Bugle that is causing the biggest stir among fans. This is due to the revelation that Ben Parker, Peter's uncle, is the managing editor of the new Ultimate Universe Daily Bugle.
Spider-Man fans were taken by surprise by the significant change that came with the new era of Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man #1.
“Holyshit Ben alive this universe best universe for Peter” one Redditor said.
“My mouth dropped when I saw this, I can wait to pick up this issue” added another.
"Wow! In this universe, Peter actually has a happy life," another Redditor exclaimed.
In all previous universes, the death of Ben Parker has been one of the few constants. This tragedy, for which Peter blames himself, has motivated him to give up his fantasies of greatness and become a superhero.
In the classic origin of Spider-Man, Uncle Ben is shot by a mugger whom Peter fails to stop. While the original story indicates that this was a coincidence, some later retcons like Spider-Man: Chapter One have tried to more directly link this event to Peter by having the mugger follow Spider-Man home, mistakenly believing that he is also a criminal.
The original Ultimate Comics retained this origin, and most iterations of Spider-Man have kept the death of Uncle Ben as the driving force behind Peter's decision to become a hero. However, there are some exceptions, such as the alternate reality House of M, where Peter was a celebrity hero believed to be a mutant, and the MCU Spider-Man, where Marissa Tomei's Aunt May seems to have largely taken on the role traditionally associated with Uncle Ben.
Ultimate Spider-Man takes a different approach. In this storyline, May Parker is believed to be dead after being caught in the same attack that killed Norman Osborn. Ben continues to motivate Peter to make a change in his life, urging him to reclaim the powers that were taken from him by The Maker. The impact of Ben and Peter's relationship on his time as Spider-Man is yet to be revealed, but hints may be offered in upcoming issues and the Spider-Man-centric Free Comic Book Day release.

Editor's P/S
As a longtime Spider-Man fan, I was initially skeptical about the new Ultimate Spider-Man series. I've been disappointed with the direction of the 616-universe Spider-Man for some time now, and I was worried that the new series would simply be more of the same. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the first issue. The new Ultimate Universe is a breath of fresh air, and I'm excited to see where the series goes from here.
One of the things I liked most about the first issue was the resurrection of Ben Parker. This was a completely unexpected twist, and it has me intrigued about the new Ultimate Universe. I'm curious to see how Ben's presence will affect Peter's life and his career as Spider-Man. I'm also interested in learning more about the circumstances of Ben's death and how he was brought back to life.
