Summary
Doctor Who
The Doctor's companions frequently encounter peril, with some losing their lives while journeying in the TARDIS. The Doctor has witnessed the sacrifices made by individuals like Katarina, Adric, and Kamelion, and their untimely deaths continue to profoundly affect him.
Clara, Bill, Astrid, Adelaide, and River have all faced tragic fates, yet managed to find a way to continue their thrilling journeys in various forms.
Throughout its 60-year existence, Doctor Who has witnessed the presence of numerous companions. However, not all of them have had the fortune of surviving and recounting their experiences aboard the TARDIS. In the midst of the Doctor's chaotic sci-fi universe, his friends are frequently endangered, battling formidable foes like the Daleks and Cybermen, and occasionally succumbing to the grasp of time itself. As the years have passed, the Doctor's companions have come and gone, often without having a say in the matter.
Although the Doctor recollects every traveler they brought aboard the TARDIS, trying to erase any memory of their deaths has always been a challenging process. Moreover, it is noteworthy that amidst the confusion of time and space, some companions have been revived and continued their journeys in the TARDIS. While numerous companions have perished during the Doctor's adventures, only a select few have truly remained deceased.
9 Katarina
Katarina was the Doctor's first-ever companion to perish and she journeyed alongside the First Doctor, portrayed by William Hartnell. Prior to encountering the Doctor, Katarina's life was consumed by foretellings of her own demise. Following her escape from the Daleks with the Doctor and Jamie on a stolen spacecraft, Katarina became a hostage of the criminal Kirksen on their way to Earth. Despite being urged to alter the ship's course, Katarina bravely sacrificed herself by opening an airlock door, resulting in the death of Kirksen. Katarina's demise occurred early in the Doctor's chronology, leaving a profound impact on his heart. Consequently, he sporadically alludes to her existence throughout his various regenerations.
8 Adric
7 Kamelion
Adric served as a companion to both the Fourth (Tom Baker) and Fifth (Peter Davison) Doctors until he tragically lost his life in a confrontation with the Neomorph Cybermen. While the Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan were trapped aboard the malfunctioning TARDIS, Jamie found himself aboard a Cybermen freighter, desperately trying to alter its course before it crashed into pre-historic Earth. Unfortunately, with the TARDIS damaged, the Doctor was unable to prevent the disaster. Adric faced a similar predicament with the freighter's controls, coming to terms with his inevitable demise. Even though the Cybermen's scheme to annihilate the Earth was thwarted, Adric met a somber fate as the Doctor watched him plunge to his death.
Kamelion, a shape-shifting android, was a loyal companion to the Fifth Doctor. Originally belonging to the Tremas Master, Kamelion was used by the Master in an attempt to prevent the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. However, the Doctor rescued Kamelion and invited him to join the TARDIS crew. Unfortunately, the Tremas Master eventually caught up with them and took control of Kamelion's body. In order to separate the android from the Time Lord, the Doctor utilized gas control circuitry, which caused Kamelion to suffer a near-fatal heart attack. Filled with agony, Kamelion pleaded with the Doctor to end his suffering, and despite his reluctance, the Doctor agreed to grant Kamelion's request.
6 K-9 Mark III
K-9 Mark III, accompanied by Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), was a faithful companion throughout the '80s and '90s. However, as K-9 began to experience mechanical issues, Sarah Jane was unable to repair him, ultimately leading to his deactivation.
In a surprising turn of events, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) resurrected K-9 in "School Reunion" to aid in the battle against the formidable Krillitanes. Displaying immense loyalty, K-9 valiantly sacrificed itself by detonating a barrel of Krillitane oil, thus protecting the Doctor.
Although Sarah Jane was devastated by the loss of her dear companion, her spirits were lifted when she discovered that the Doctor had bestowed upon her a new companion - K-9 Mark IV.
5 Clara Oswald
As a companion to both the Eleventh (Matt Smith) and the Twelfth (Peter Capaldi) Doctors, Clara Oswald had the unique experience of encountering different versions of herself. In the thrilling episode "Face the Raven," the Twelfth Doctor witnessed Clara's selfless act of sacrificing herself to save Rigsy from a deadly fate on Trap Street. Despite the Doctor's desperate attempt to alter time and rescue Clara, their efforts proved futile, and all recollections of her were erased.
4 Bill Potts
What the Doctor failed to comprehend, however, was that an almost lifeless version of Clara had slipped away into the vastness of space alongside Ashildr mere moments before her imminent demise. Their intention was to navigate back to Clara's own timestream and ensure the occurrence of her death. Consequently, the two were joyously reunited once again, right before the Twelfth Doctor underwent regeneration. It was during this transformative moment that his deceased companions Bill (Pearl Mackie), Clara, and Nardole (Matt Lucas) reappeared as virtual entities, bidding their heartfelt farewells to him.
Bill Potts, the final companion of the Twelfth Doctor, tragically met her demise when she was transformed into a Cyberman in the episode "World Enough and Time." Heartbreakingly, Bill's consciousness remained intact within her new cybernetic form, oblivious to her conversion. A harrowing battle ensued throughout the various levels of the Cybermen's vessel, rendering the Doctor unconscious by its conclusion. Upon realizing her own demise, Bill escorted the Doctor back to the TARDIS before embarking on a new journey with Heather. It was revealed that a semblance of Bill's memories had been securely uploaded to the Testimony Foundation.
3 Astrid Peth
Australian pop star Kylie Minogue famously portrayed Astrid Peth in the Doctor Who holiday special "Voyage of the Damned." Astrid worked as a waitress on the alien cruise ship, the Titanic, where she encountered the Tenth Doctor. Despite only being a companion for one episode, Astrid selflessly sacrificed herself to protect the Doctor. She utilized a forklift to plunge the nefarious Max Capricorn, the ship's owner, and his life support system into the Titanic's engines.
Although Astrid had a teleportation bracelet, it was too damaged to save her. Unfortunately, the Doctor was unable to rescue her, and her consciousness was released into the cosmos. While Astrid's character may no longer be alive, there have been discussions about Kylie Minogue potentially returning to Doctor Who. Although it may seem unlikely because of Russell T. Davies' return to the show in 2023, the resurrection of Astrid in the future cannot be completely ruled out.
2 Adelaide Brooke
Captain Adelaide Brooke, the first woman to set foot on Mars, briefly joined the Tenth Doctor as his companion in the episode "The Waters of Mars." Following the loss of Donna Noble, the Doctor was emotionally vulnerable and frustrated with the laws of the universe. Despite knowing that the crew of Bowie Base One was destined to die on Mars, he made the decision to save their lives. Adelaide, however, strongly disagreed with the Doctor's actions, questioning whether he possessed the authority to manipulate time in such a manner. Ultimately, when the Doctor returned Adelaide to her home on Earth, she tragically took her own life, ensuring that her timeline unfolded as it was meant to.
1 River Song
River Song, the wife of the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, was also the daughter of Doctor Who companions Amy and Rory. The Tenth Doctor first encountered River in the Library, where she sacrificed herself to save him. Due to using up all her regenerations earlier in her lifetime, River could not survive. After her death, the Doctor inherited a sonic screwdriver he had given her in the future. He discovered his future self's plan and managed to upload River's consciousness to the Library database to preserve her.
