Caution! Spoilers ahead for Outlander season 7, episode 3 and the Outlander books.
Following the shocking conclusion of the previous episode, Outlander season 7, episode 3 delivered on one of the most highly anticipated events of the series, along with several significant story revelations. Ever since season 4, Jamie and Claire have been aware that their deaths would be falsely reported in the future as a result of a house fire. The aftermath of a fire, caused unintentionally by Wendigo Donner's reckless search for gems, dominated the majority of episode 3 while also unveiling a long-standing mystery. In addition to the revelation of the masked man's true identity, a beloved character's accidental killing shook Fraser's Ridge.
Fraser's Ridge Fire Months Ahead Proved Brianna Saved Jamie & Claire
: The third episode of Outlander season 7 continued to explore the impact of Brianna and Roger's absence on Jamie and Claire. Alongside depicting how Claire and Jamie coped with longing for their daughter and missing a part of their family, this installment also delved into Brianna and Roger's perspective in the future. Thanks to the uncovering of a vault filled with letters, they were able to experience a heartwarming sense of closeness to Jamie and Claire despite the vast time difference of 200 years. However, the contents of some of these letters will soon bring about difficulties for them, as revealed in the seventh novel of the Outlander series, An Echo in the Bone. All in all, episode 3 of Outlander season 7 progressed several storylines that are bound to become central in the near future.
Brianna's decision to travel back in time in Outlander season 4 had a specific purpose - to warn Claire and her biological father Jamie about an impending fire that could have destroyed their home and potentially claimed their lives. The experience of time travel was quite traumatic for Brianna, but it ultimately allowed her to forge a beautiful relationship with Jamie, her biological father, whom she might have never known otherwise. Although Brianna and Roger never intended to stay in the past, they ended up building a life together in the 1700s. However, they had to leave behind that life due to their daughter Mandy's heart defect.
The Jacobite Gold Will Play A Big Part In Roger & Brianna's Future Story
Discovering from Claire’s letter that a fire had occurred nine months prior, ignited by a match that Brianna herself had created and Donner had unknowingly lit, solidified the fact that Brianna’s ability to time-travel had profoundly altered the destiny of her parents. Not only had Brianna forewarned Claire and Jamie about the tragic event, but she had also chosen to remain by their side for years, exerting an influential impact on their daily lives and ultimately reshaping their future. Furthermore, the undeniable outcome of Brianna’s journey served as undeniable proof that time-travel had the capability to alter the past, even for individuals who may not have been regarded as pivotal enough to be recorded in the annals of history.
The dramatic conclusion of Outlander season 7, episode 2 briefly overlooked Mrs. Bug's betrayal of the Frasers. Not only did the Bugs conceal a portion of the Jacobite gold in Jamie and Claire's residence on Fraser's Ridge without their knowledge, but they also pilfered from their own family, considering that the gold was originally acquired by Aunt Jocasta's spouse, Hector Cameron. The discovery of the Jacobite gold had already caused significant strife, leading to the Bugs' dismissal and the subsequent demise of Mrs. Bug. Nonetheless, Jamie's choice to melt the gold and conceal it in case Brianna and Roger required it in the future will present them with further complications, jeopardizing the safety of Jemmy.
Arch Bug's Threat Will Come Back To Haunt Ian
Outlander season 7 will bring crisis to Brianna and Roger's presence in Scotland as they face the aftermath of events in the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone. The discovery of the Jacobite gold, as revealed in Claire's letter to her colleague Rob Cameron, sets off a chain of events that leads to Jemmy's kidnapping. To make matters worse, Cameron claims to have taken Jemmy back in time, resulting in the separation of Brianna and Roger. Determined to find their son, Roger decides to embark on a journey to the 1700s through time travel. The imminent trouble caused by the knowledge of the Jacobite gold will deeply impact the Mackenzie family in Outlander season 7, echoing the events depicted in the Outlander books.
The death of Mrs. Bug had a profound impact on Young Ian, although he had only fired an arrow to protect Jamie from a gun aimed at him. Nearly half of episode 3 of Outlander's seventh season was devoted to mourning Mrs. Bug's passing. She held the role of a grandmother figure for Ian and was always caring for those at Fraser's Ridge. This made her betrayal and subsequent death even more significant. While Mrs. Bug's death resulted from a split-second reaction that will undoubtedly haunt Ian, its consequences will also be felt through Arch Bug, who has vowed vengeance.
Indeed, An Echo in the Bone allows Arch Bug to fulfill his promise to Young Ian, as he eventually find a new love after being heartbroken over his wife, Wakyo'teyehsnonhsa, for a significant amount of time. While William miraculously foils the attempt on Ian's new love, Arch Bug comes close to severing Ian's arm in the process. Given that all the heartbreak stemmed from the discovery of the cursed Jacobite gold, it is not unreasonable to believe the myths surrounding its drama in both the 18th and 20th centuries in Outlander.
Jamie's Prediction About Where He'll Die Eerily References 1 Book
The death of Mrs. Bug sparked a discussion between Jamie and Claire in Outlander season 7, episode 3 regarding their burial preferences. This conversation hinted at a possible storyline from An Echo in the Bone that may appear in the upcoming season 7 of Outlander. Initially serious, Claire asked Jamie where he would like to be buried, to which he responded with a touch of humor, suggesting that he would be more likely to be "drowned, burnt, or left to rot in some battlefield" rather than being buried. Interestingly, in one storyline from An Echo in the Bone, Jamie is presumed dead due to a shipwreck, which aligns with his prediction that he may not be buried at all. Although this fate has not yet befallen Jamie in the Outlander books, it presents an intriguing possibility for the future seasons of the show.
Adso's Comeback Aptly Marks Jamie & Claire's Departure From Fraser's Ridge
Fraser's Ridge had been Jamie and Claire's residence for almost a decade as of Outlander season 7, episode 3, serving as their only long-term dwelling together. Adso, the family's beloved cat, had been by their side since Outlander season 5, episode 5, accompanying them during a particularly joyous period in their lives alongside their daughter Brianna and her husband Roger. The reunion between Claire and Adso held significant emotional weight, as it confirmed his safety after their previous encounter during the haunting events of the Committee of Safety's attack on their home in the finale of Outlander season 6.
However, stumbling upon Adso happily in the forest at the start of their journey to Scotland carried another profound meaning. Given that Fraser's Ridge symbolized not only Jamie and Claire's home but also Adso's, witnessing his presence served as a poignant farewell. Bidding farewell to their feline companion before embarking on a treacherous journey across the ocean was the perfect culmination of their mostly idyllic time at Fraser's Ridge, setting the stage for the forthcoming adventure that will undeniably bring about a change of scenery in Outlander season 7.
