Summary
In the concluding scene of Fast X, director Louis Leterrier tactfully concealed Dwayne Johnson's portrayal by skillfully employing a combination of shadows, masks, and lighting techniques, effectively diverting the viewers' focus away from his unmistakable presence.
Johnson's reprisal of the character Hobbs in Fast X was eagerly awaited and generated much excitement, particularly following the success of the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff and his highly publicized feud with Vin Diesel.
Despite the initial conflicts and delays resulting from the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, Leterrier approached Johnson to make an appearance in Fast X once principal photography for the tenth installment had concluded, renewing hope for Johnson's comeback in the Fast & Furious franchise.
Fast X director Louis Leterrier reveals his strategy for concealing Dwayne Johnson's cameo in the final scene. Johnson makes a surprise appearance as Luke Hobbs, a beloved character, in a mid-credits scene, setting up the anticipated showdown between Fast X antagonist Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) and Hobbs in an upcoming spinoff centered around Johnson's Fast & Furious persona. This spinoff will directly lead to the events of Fast & Furious 11, slated for a 2025 theatrical release.
During an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+), Leterrier discloses his approach to keeping Johnson's cameo under wraps until the last minute of the Fast X credits scene. Recognizing that Johnson's physique could easily give him away, the director had to employ a different strategy. Read below to find out what he had to say about the process:
The scene exists within its own distinct context, providing a stark contrast to what has previously transpired. When capturing footage of Dwayne Johnson, regardless of his appearance, his unmistakable presence is immediately recognizable. This led me to ponder, "How can I alter the atmosphere?" My solution was to conceal his identity using shadows and masks, while using various lighting techniques and flares to divert attention away from the subject being filmed. This allowed for a seamless integration of the filmmaking process, ensuring that the focus was not solely on the individual in front of the camera or their intended target. Such was the concept that guided my approach.
Given the somber finale of our film, it would have been inappropriate to transition abruptly into a lighthearted comedy scene. Instead, it was essential to maintain continuity and remain true to the prevailing darkness. This particular scene serves as the culmination of Dante's intricate plan, unveiling his true intentions. Moreover, the incredible privilege of having Dwayne Johnson return to the main franchise gave that day an undeniable sense of honor and awe-inspiring energy.
Dwayne Johnson's Return As Hobbs Is The Most Exciting Part Of Fast X
Although Fast X did not receive the same level of positive reception as its predecessors in the Fast & Furious franchise, it does have some noteworthy highlights. One of these highlights is the highly-anticipated return of Johnson as Hobbs, which occurred shortly after the failure of Black Adam at the box office. This return also followed a well-publicized feud between Johnson and actor Vin Diesel during the production of The Fate of the Furious in 2017. However, it appears that the actors have reconciled their differences, and Johnson has openly expressed his excitement for his return to the Fast & Furious franchise for the final installments and another spinoff centered around Hobbs.
The release of the first Hobbs & Shaw film caused controversy within the Fast family, as actor Tyrese Gibson held Johnson responsible for participating in the spinoff and causing a delay in the release of F9. The COVID-19 pandemic further pushed back the release of the ninth installment to June 2021, offering no indication of Johnson's willingness to return to the Fast & Furious franchise. However, there were behind-the-scenes developments, with Leterrier approaching Johnson to join the cast of Fast X after principal photography for the tenth movie concluded.
Considering that it appeared unlikely for Johnson to make a comeback in the Fast & Furious series, his cameo as Hobbs holds a sense of significance. Some argue on social media that the actor is eager for a successful franchise following Black Adam, but it is worth noting that Hobbs is one of Johnson's most beloved characters. It was nearly inevitable that he would eventually resolve his feud with Diesel and make a return. Only time will reveal how his presence will influence the future of the franchise after his appearance in Fast X.
