Sarah Shahi is entering the dialogue about onscreen prosthetics following inquiries from Sex/Life fans regarding Adam Demos' use of one during the show's explicit scenes on Netflix.
In a behind-the-scenes snapshot posted on Saturday, June 24, the 43-year-old actress can be seen getting ready to wear prosthetic breasts for the series.
"These breasts were not mine. It would take our prosthetics team approximately three to four hours every morning to apply them. I would wear them during any intimate scene with Cooper or when I needed to portray breastfeeding," she explained in the caption of the Instagram Story post. "Look closely, there's silicone glue right there."
Shahi further explained her decision to use prosthetics in certain scenes while discussing it with the host of the "Not Skinny But Not Fat" podcast, Amanda Hirsch, through an Instagram message.
The Person of Interest alum wrote about the intimate scenes involving the character Cooper, as well as the presence of a baby. The scenes with Brad belonged to the past and did not involve breastfeeding. The actress mentioned her character's changing body and asked if it made sense. Sex/Life, which aired from 2021 to 2023, followed Billie, a suburban mother portrayed by Shahi, who starts questioning her marriage to husband Cooper, played by Mike Vogel. As Billie seeks deeper meaning in her life, she writes about her previous relationship with ex-boyfriend Brad, portrayed by Demos, and ultimately reconnects with him.
Shahi has previously commended the show for its depiction of sex in a liberating manner on screen. In an exclusive interview with We in June 2021, she expressed her belief that sex scenes in film and television tend to be portrayed from a male perspective, except in cases of lesbian content. She saw this show as a chance to challenge that norm and present female sexuality through the eyes of women on screen. Shahi considered it a powerful statement to showcase the complexity and sensuality of women as sexual beings.

Sex/Life became a cultural phenomenon partly due to the memorable shower scene. This pivotal moment occurred in the first season, where Billie's husband Cooper discreetly followed Brad to the gym. Shortly after Brad finished his workout, both Cooper and the viewers were unexpectedly exposed to a glimpse of Brad's masculinity as he showered.
In July 2021, the official Twitter account of the show shared the official script pages for the explicit scene. A section of the script described how Cooper couldn't resist looking at Brad's private area, which had previously brought pleasure to his wife. As Cooper glanced back up at Brad, he felt even more inferior and guilty for his actions.
Initially, Demos, aged 38, and the creator of the series, Stacy Rukeyser, were evasive when questioned about his character's well-known shower scene. However, earlier this year, Demos, who is originally from Australia, confirmed that a prosthetic was used.
“Yes [it is a prosthetic]. That just makes you feel better. Also, to all the men out there who were worried, it was,” Demos, who is currently dating Shahi, told The Project TV in March.
