Margot Robbie's Barbie movie is causing concern among international audiences due to a specific scene that references an Asian political conflict. This controversy has prompted discussions about whether some countries should allow the film to be released in their region. Recently, another country has entered the debate and may ban Barbie from being shown in their cinemas.
On July 3rd, Vietnam's authorities made the decision to forbid screenings of the Barbie movie in their country. This policy was implemented after it was discovered that the film includes a map featuring the "nine-dash line," a series of lines on the map that asserts China's territorial claims over the South China Sea. Vietnam argues that this depiction violates their sovereignty. "We refuse to grant a license for the American film 'Barbie' to be released in Vietnam due to its inclusion of the offensive image of the nine-dash line," stated the state-run newspaper Tuoi Tre.
A day after Vietnam, the Philippines has also joined the battle against the portrayal of sea lines. According to Variety, the country is considering banning director Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie. On Tuesday, Francis Tolentino, a senator of the Philippines and vice chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, expressed his concerns to local media. He stated that if the movie indeed featured the controversial nine-dash line, it should be banned by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) as it undermines Philippine sovereignty. Later that day, the MTRCB released a statement confirming that they are evaluating the film's classification without providing any further details.
However, a complete ban on national Barbie movies is not the only solution. Both parties are open to compromise, such as removing the scene showing the nine-dash line or editing the map. Another option suggested by Senator Risa Hontiveros is for Philippine cinemas to include a clear disclaimer stating that the nine-dash line is "a fictitious creation of China."
The South China Sea has been a contentious issue since the 20th century, as it is home to important trade routes, abundant fishing grounds, and valuable mineral resources. China and its neighboring countries have disputed the territory. In 2016, a dispute resolution tribunal in the United States unanimously ruled against the validity of China's claim and its nine-dash line. However, no concrete measures have been taken to enforce this decision, and China has stated that it does not recognize the ruling.
Additionally, the nine-dash line has previously stirred up disputes within the film industry. Uncharted faced obstacles in its release in the Philippines due to this issue last year, while Abominable, an animated film by DreamWorks, was prohibited in Vietnam for the same reasons. Moreover, television series including Put Your Head On My Shoulders and Madam Secretary were instructed to remove scenes depicting these maps. Mark your calendars for Barbie's theatrical release on July 21, 2023.
