Zachary Levi criticizes Hollywood for producing subpar content, expressing his belief that they don't care enough to make it great for audiences.
Levi asserts that viewers should actively refrain from selecting inferior content and instead back higher caliber productions to instigate transformations within the industry.
Several individuals perceive Levi's critique as severe, particularly given his own participation in Shazam 2, and question his capacity to detach himself from the influence of Hollywood.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi has once again captivated attention with his bold remarks on the content and mindset prevailing in Hollywood.
Levi, a popular actor in Hollywood, gained significant recognition for his portrayal of the main character in Shazam!, where he played a teenage protagonist who transforms into a powerful adult superhero after being bestowed with the ancient gods' abilities by an age-old wizard. A sequel was announced, and Levi implied that Shazam! Fury of the Gods would surpass its predecessor. However, contrary to expectations, the opening weekend box office performance of Shazam 2 fell short, despite initially low projections.
Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, Entertainment Weekly reports the Shazam star expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the quality of content being produced by the industry for audiences. "In my opinion, the amount of content that Hollywood churns out, which is plain rubbish, reflects their lack of dedication to creating exceptional experiences for all of you. They simply don't care enough," he stated. The audience responded with great enthusiasm, as evidenced by the loud cheers and applause.
Levi, who was cast in a prominent role in the Spy Kids reboot alongside Gina Rodriguez, expanded on his thoughts. "Often, we watch a trailer and think, 'Wow, this looks amazing!' Then we see the movie and feel let down," Levi explained. "The industry knows that once we've bought the ticket and are sitting in the theater, they already have our money. The only way to make a difference is to actively avoid supporting mediocre content. It will make a significant impact." This sentiment isn't new, as many fans online have expressed similar opinions.
While Levi's statement holds some truth, many have criticized his harsh critique, especially considering his own response to negative reviews of Shazam 2. In his response, he described the film's critical assessment as "strangely and surprisingly low" and claimed that people were unreasonably harsh. Some have pointed out that the film's underwhelming performance at the box office can be seen as people actively avoiding subpar content, leading to confusion about how Levi can distance himself from the Hollywood industry despite being an actor within it.
Whether fans agree with Levi or are put off by the way he separates himself from a recent unpopular project, it appears that this statement may be an effort to demonstrate where the actor's loyalties lie in the ongoing dispute between studios and the actors and writers guilds. Similar to Stephen Amell, the star of Arrowverse who publicly supported the strike after initially criticizing it, Levi may be using this opportunity to indicate his support for the strike action by differentiating his own work from that of the "corporate" entities involved in filmmaking.
