Manchester United are on the verge of finalizing an agreement with Tottenham for the acquisition of defender Sergio Reguilon.
Reguilon has been cleared to journey to Manchester and undergo a medical examination before the deadline on Friday at 11pm.
United has opted for a straight loan deal with the Spaniard in order to acquire a left-back, given the injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. While talks were initially in progress with Chelsea for Marc Cucurella, it is believed that the agreement with Reguilon presents United with a stronger opportunity to negotiate a deal with Fiorentina for midfielder Sofyan Amrabat due to the financial aspects involved.
Reguilon has yet to make an appearance for Spurs this season and spent the previous campaign on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he only featured in 12 matches.
The 26-year-old, who joined Tottenham in September 2020 from Real Madrid for a transfer fee of £32m, currently has two years remaining on his contract.
United continuing to work on Amrabat deal
With Reguilon set for a move to Old Trafford, United are continuing to work on a deal to sign Amrabat.
Fiorentina has a preference for a permanent agreement, while United is aware of the need to adhere to FFP regulations and is considering a loan option. It is believed that a loan with an option that converts into an obligation might be a suitable compromise for the Serie A club, contingent upon the associated loan fee and permanent price.
The 27-year-old's desire to join United is evident, as he has refrained from training with Fiorentina's first-team squad until his future is settled. With one year remaining on his contract, the Moroccan international also holds the possibility of extending it for another year.
Fiorentina is not anticipating his presence in their squad for the Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Rapid Vienna on Thursday due to ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
In the meantime, Lorient is still engaged in negotiations with United regarding the acquisition of midfielder Donny van de Beek.
A number of other clubs have expressed their interest in the Dutchman.
