Last week, Tonali was implicated in an investigation involving Italian football betting and as a result, he was excluded from the senior men's squad for the Tuesday match against England, which ended in a defeat.

According to FIFA Code 26, players engaging in this kind of conduct, as witnessed by We News during his hearing on Tuesday, can potentially receive a ban from global football for up to three years.

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli has received a seven-month suspension from the Italian Football Federation due to his violation of betting regulations. Fagioli, who was the first player investigated in the matter, confessed to placing bets on football matches. In contrast, Tonali, another player involved, did not report any involvement in such activities.

Fagioli received a suspended one-year ban and was fined €12,500 (£10,848) by the FIGC. Additionally, he has agreed to undergo a minimum of six months of therapy to address his gambling issue. The governing body stated on its website that the 22-year-old had violated the rule against betting on football events organized by FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA.

Tonali, who completed a £55m move from Milan to Newcastle in the summer, is scheduled to return to Newcastle on Wednesday.

Tonali's agent acknowledged on Tuesday that the player is dealing with a gambling issue and emphasized that this is the most significant hurdle he has faced in his career.

Newcastle face Crystal Palace at home on Saturday.
