The Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus provided fresh insights into unexplored aspects of Star Wars lore. While some fans felt that the execution fell short, resembling The Star Wars Holiday Special rather than Andor, the show's ideas and stories still resonated with many viewers. A standout character in the series was the Inquisitor Reva, portrayed by Moses Ingram alongside Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor. Reva's complexity captivated fans, as it became apparent early on that she possessed qualities distinct from the other Inquisitors. However, it was not revealed until later in the series that her hidden motive for joining the Inquisitors was to assassinate Darth Vader. This revelation showcased the depth of Ingram's remarkable performance and the skillful direction of Deborah Chow. Interestingly, this complexity is evident on the surface, adding another layer to Reva's character.
In an interview with Variety, costume designer Suttirat Larlarb discussed the intricate details she incorporated into the attire of various characters, such as Reva and her formidable yet practical armor. Larlarb aimed to visually represent Reva's inner conflict through her physical appearance. She elaborated on one particular detail of the leather cuirass: "Stacia Lang, the assistant costume designer, skillfully transformed the multiple sketch lines I repeatedly drew on the center front of the armor into a discreet feature resembling a front-facing external spine—a low, elongated, and pointed 'fin'."
Ingram faced racist attacks from self-proclaimed Star Wars fans, showcasing her resilience, although it should have never occurred in the first place. Her strength of character was evident as she embraced Larlarb and Lang's designs. "Moses saw this detail as a representation of her conflicted but resolute heart," Larlarb explained. "Additionally, we incorporated the imperial symbol discreetly on the inside of her split cape, subtly expressing her conflicting loyalties."
Despite uncertainty surrounding a potential second season for Obi-Wan Kenobi, especially due to mixed critical reception, the series still boasts a devoted fan base. This can be attributed partially to Reva as a character and Ingram's exceptional performance. However, the intricate details crafted by Larlarb and her team have also grown on fans, often without their awareness. Effective costume design communicates subtle messages to the audience, enhancing their viewing experience.
Ingram has received widespread support from fellow Star Wars actors amidst the racist attacks, and fans have also shown their solidarity. It would be highly valued and welcomed by many if she were to make a comeback in some capacity. Hopefully, her character will receive the same meticulous care and attention from Larlarb's team of designers as they did for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Undoubtedly, she deserves no less.
