In the fifth installment of the Scream franchise, there was a shift in focus as a new generation of characters faced the distressing ordeal of being pursued by Ghostface. However, Neve Campbell, who portrays Sidney Prescott, expresses her discontent with a significant death in the film.
Having finally found some semblance of peace, Sidney Prescott has moved forward with her life, getting married and starting a family after enduring years of being targeted by a murderous assailant. However, in the fifth installment of Scream, Sidney, along with Gale Weathers and Dewey, is compelled to return to Woodboro when a fresh Ghostface killer emerges.
In keeping with the tradition of the Scream movies, the primary target of the killer is someone who has a connection to the previous films. The latest incarnation of Ghostface is targeting Sam Carpenter, her younger sister, and their friends. The reason behind this becomes clear when it is revealed that Sam's father was Billy Loomis, and the killer is an avid fan of the Stab movies.
Fans were delighted to witness the return of the three beloved original Woodboro characters, who found themselves back where it all began. However, the loss of a significant character in the Scream series left Neve Campbell feeling disappointed.
Dewy, Tara, Sam, and Richie fight Ghostface
In the latest installment of Scream, Dewey once again takes up the mantle of defender, aiding Sam, Tara, and their companions in evading the relentless pursuit of Ghostface. Neve Campbell opens up about her dissatisfaction with Dewey's demise.
At Monster-Mania Con 2023, a fan asked Campbell what she thought about Dewey’s death in Scream.
"I was devastated when I heard the news of Dewey's death. It felt like such a tragedy, and although I typically don't criticize the writing in these projects, I was genuinely disappointed with their decision to remove David from the story. Dewey was such a beloved character, and I know we all had a deep connection with him. It's understandable that they did it for greater impact, but now I can't help but miss him. I long to see more of him," she expressed in the video shared on Twitter (X).
Since Dewey's last appearance, he had a falling out with Gale, lost his job as Sheriff due to his struggles with alcoholism. When the new Ghostface attacks begin, he warns Sydney and Gale. Determined to finally put an end to the cycle, Dewey chooses to assist Sam and her friends. Following the tragic murders of Wes and his mother, Dewey accompanies Sam to the hospital to check on Tara.
Tara senses something amiss and Ghostface promptly materializes. Sam manages to escape with the assistance of Sam and Richy, while Dewey fires his gun. In a surprising turn of events typical of Dewey, he remains behind to confront Ghostface alone. Dewey aims his firearm at the presumed unconscious killer, only to be distracted by a phone call. Seizing the opportunity, Ghostface viciously stabs Dewey in the stomach and back. Thus, the beloved character from the Scream franchise meets his demise.
With rumors circulating online about Scream 7, fans are clamoring for the original legacy characters to make a comeback, including Neve Campbell. Speculation also suggests that Eli Roth's Thanksgiving might reintroduce Patrick Dempsey as Mark Kincaid.

Editor's P/S
As a Scream fan, I was thrilled to hear about the release of the fifth installment in the franchise. I was particularly excited to see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, as well as the introduction of a new generation of characters. However, I was disappointed to learn about the death of a significant character in the film.
Neve Campbell's comments about Dewey's death echo my own feelings. I was devastated when I saw Dewey die, and I think it was a huge mistake to kill off such a beloved character. Dewey was a fan favorite, and his death was a real gut punch. I understand that the filmmakers wanted to make a big impact with this movie, but I think they went too far by killing off Dewey.
