Melissa Barrera, star of the Scream franchise, has been removed from the upcoming seventh film, much to the disappointment of fans. The Scream films have been a major part of the horror genre since the original film's release in 1996.
Following the release of six Scream movies, the franchise was revived for a new generation with the successful entries of Scream 5 and 6. Unfortunately, lead actress Melissa Barrera has reportedly been dropped from Scream 7, leaving fans dissatisfied with the decision and alleged reasons behind it.
Barrera dropped from Scream 7 for social media posts
The latest film from the Scream franchise has seen Barrera dropped by Spyglass, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. No official comment has been made by the studio at this time.
Allegedly, the actress’ exit from Scream 7 is linked to her recent social media commentary on the situation in Gaza. A wave of frustration and anger from Scream fans flooded Twitter as they expressed disapproval over Barrera being let go for expressing her personal opinion.
Not only are many fans confused about Barrera’s departure, but others have also noted that this marks the franchise’s second loss of a female lead.
The original Scream protagonist, Neve Campbell, famously did not reprise her role in Scream VI due to contractual issues. Campbell declined the opportunity to return, citing feeling undervalued by the studio for her previous contributions to the franchise. Neither Spyglass nor anyone from Barrera's team has commented on the situation at this time, but we will continue to update this page as more information becomes available.

As an enthusiastic fan of the Scream franchise, I am deeply saddened and frustrated by the news that Melissa Barrera has been axed from the upcoming Scream 7 film. Barrera's portrayal of Sam Carpenter in Scream 5 and 6 was widely praised by fans and critics alike, and her chemistry with co-star Jenna Ortega was a major highlight of the recent films.
The reported reason for Barrera's departure, her social media commentary on the situation in Gaza, is particularly concerning. It is deeply troubling that a studio would choose to punish an actress for expressing her personal views on a humanitarian issue. This decision sends a chilling message to artists and creatives, suggesting that they must censor themselves or risk facing professional repercussions.
