Netflix's 2023 anime "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" received positive reviews upon its debut. However, fans have been quick to comment on some noticeable and polarizing changes. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's beloved comic book series, the show premiered on November 17, 2023, and was met with critical acclaim. Despite this, it's clear that not everyone is completely satisfied with the adaptation.
The eight-part anime series differs from its source material, deviating from the books and the movie to create an original story. Some fans expressed disapproval, taking to social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit to comment on the "shock twist" and "confusing" script. In response, O'Malley addressed their concerns on his IG story.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and fans complain
Dubbed by some as the ultimate bait-and-switch, the fresh anime is touted as a forward-looking reinterpretation of the beloved comic book. However, with a surprising turn and departures from the original material, numerous fans were thrilled while some had mixed reviews.
The confusion arose from the misleading marketing tactics that positioned the series as a faithful adaptation of the comic book. However, fans quickly realized that the show took significant creative liberties and deviated from the original storyline. This left many feeling disappointed and betrayed by the false advertising.
The series introduces all your favorite characters from the movie and the comic book, but with a surprising twist that takes the plot in a completely new direction. It's essentially a spin-off of Scott Pilgrim, rather than a mere anime remake.

Scott Pilgrim’s creator addresses fan concerns
After receiving criticism from certain loyal fans, Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of Scott Pilgrim, addressed fan questions about his story on Instagram on November 19. The complete post can be found on Reddit here.
Amid complaints that the new story of Scott Pilgrim didn't capture the essence loved by fans, the creator revealed, "I personally collaborated with @bdgrabinski on every script, constantly modifying the dialogue to capture the essence of Scott Pilgrim."
Addressing concerns about the marketing, he clarified, "The anime exists independently and is not a redo of the comic book or Michael Cera film. The anime timeline stands on its own, referencing the book and the movie, but it's not meant to replace them. I understand that it's quite different and might be surprising, but it's all in the spirit of fun."
Despite differing opinions on the series changes, O'Malley insists that those who are confused or seeking more information can turn to the books or movie. He concludes by expressing gratitude to those who may not enjoy the changes. The disappointment from fans regarding the new anime series direction is understandable, given the marketing decisions. However, the series has received positive reviews and offers a unique storyline, making it worth watching before forming a final judgment.

Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about the anime changes in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. On the one hand, I appreciate the show's fresh take on the beloved comic book series. The new storyline is intriguing, and I'm excited to see where it goes. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that the show deviates so much from the source material. I was expecting a more faithful adaptation, and I'm not sure if I'm on board with all of the changes.
I think the biggest problem with the anime is the marketing. The trailers and promotional materials made it seem like the show would be a more straightforward adaptation of the comic book. However, that's not the case at all. The show takes a lot of liberties with the story, and it's clear that the creators wanted to do something new and different. I think that's great, but I wish they had been more upfront about it. If I had known that the show was going to be so different, I might not have been so disappointed.
