Rosalynn Carter, the former First Lady, passed away peacefully at her home in Plains, Georgia on Sunday, November 19, at the age of 96. Known for her advocacy in mental health, caregiving, and women's rights, she was a passionate champion in these areas. The Carter Center issued a statement confirming her passing, noting that she was surrounded by her loved ones during her final moments.

Rosalynn and former president Jimmy Carter were married for an incredible 77 years. In a heartfelt statement, the 99-year-old Jimmy expressed his deep appreciation for Rosalynn, acknowledging her as his equal partner in all of his achievements. He credited her wise guidance and unwavering encouragement as invaluable support in his journey. Jimmy emphasized that as long as Rosalynn was by his side, he found comfort in the knowledge that he was cherished and backed up by someone who truly loved him.

Rosalynn, who is currently in hospice care, is survived by Jimmy, their four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. (Rosalynn and Jimmy had sons Jack, Chip, and Jeff, as well as daughter Amy.)

Chip, 73, stated, "In addition to being a loving mother and exceptional First Lady, my mother was a remarkable humanitarian in her own right. Her life of service and compassion served as an example to all Americans. Her absence will be deeply felt, not only by our family but also by the countless individuals who now have improved mental healthcare and access to caregiving resources."

On Friday, November 17, the Carter Center announced that Rosalynn has entered hospice care. According to a statement from grandson Jason Carter, both she and President Carter are currently spending quality time together with their family. The Carter family kindly requests privacy during this time and greatly appreciates the overwhelming love and support received.

Rosalynn had been diagnosed with dementia in May and continued to live at home with Jimmy.

After their marriage in July 1946, Rosalynn and Jimmy moved their family from Plains, Georgia to the White House in Washington, D.C nearly 30 years before he won the 1976 presidential election. Serving for one term, Jimmy left office in 1981 when Ronald Reagan was elected as the new president. Following their time in the White House, the couple returned to their hometown of Plains, where they co-founded the Carter Center. This nonprofit organization advocates for democracy, peace, and the fight against diseases. In recognition of his work with the organization, Jimmy received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Rosalynn's unwavering dedication to various causes such as mental health, caregiving, and women's rights made her a formidable advocate, both within and outside the White House. Her remarkable accomplishments led to her receiving the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999 and being honored with an induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2001.
