Rory McIlroy shared how he separates his personal life from his professional life on the golf course. The day before he filed for divorce from Erica Stoll, the 35-year-old golfer opened up about this during a press conference on Sunday, May 12. When asked about the PGA Tour Board, McIlroy mentioned, "When I step inside those ropes for four or five hours a day, it's like a break from everything else happening in the world of golf. I don't mind it at all. I've always been good at keeping things separate. It seems like I actually play better golf when I have a lot going on in my life."

McIlroy, who recently won the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, mentioned that he prefers to focus on his performance on the course rather than relying on good luck.

It was revealed that just one day after his victory, McIlroy officially filed for divorce from his wife Stoll after being married for seven years. According to reports, their marriage was declared irretrievably broken and they had a prenuptial agreement in place.

Per ESPN, McIlroy has hired Thomas J. Sasser as his lawyer. Sasser previously represented Tiger Woods during his divorce from Elin Nordegren in 2010.

McIlroy finally spoke out about the separation on Tuesday, May 14. A spokesperson for McIlroy confirmed that a divorce has been filed. They emphasized McIlroy's wish for a respectful and amicable process during this challenging time. McIlroy has chosen not to make any additional statements.

Back in 2012, Stoll met McIlroy when she was working as a PGA transport official at the Ryder Cup, helping the golfer get to the tournament after he overslept. At the time, McIlroy was dating tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, whom he got engaged to in 2013 but allegedly called it quits with via phone call months later. McIlroy and Stoll began dating not long after his split from Wozniacki, 33.

“I have met someone new,” he told The Times of London in May 2015. “She doesn’t play golf, but she is involved with golf. I have known her for three years and we are good friends. … If everything off the golf course is good, it allows you to be better on it as well.”

McIlroy shared that he was feeling "very happy" with his romantic life, mentioning that they have been keeping it low-key. His girlfriend is from America, which is why he enjoys spending time in Palm Beach. He expressed that the past six or seven months have been really wonderful and that part of his life is going great.

Later on, McIlroy proposed to Stoll in December 2015, and they got married in April 2017. Their wedding reportedly had some famous guests like Ed Sheeran, Niall Horan, and Chris Martin. The couple welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in August 2020.
