Rory McIlroy made a comeback to the golf course for the PGA Championship 2024 shortly after filing for divorce from his estranged wife, Erica Stoll, last week. The 35-year-old professional golfer decided to leave his wedding ring behind and started playing at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville at around 8 a.m. EST on Thursday, May 16. As of now, he is performing well with a score of two under par after six rounds.

McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll in Florida on Monday, May 13, stating that their marriage was "irretrievably broken." Following the news, McIlroy addressed the split.

On Tuesday, May 14, McIlroy's spokeswoman informed Irish Star that his communications team confirmed the divorce filing. They emphasized McIlroy's wish for a respectful and amicable process during this challenging time. McIlroy will refrain from making additional comments.

Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll first met in 2012 while he was dating tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. After splitting from Wozniacki in 2014, McIlroy and Stoll began dating. Stoll, who was working as a PGA transport official at the time, helped McIlroy make it to the Ryder Cup on time after he overslept. The couple got engaged in Paris in 2015 and exchanged vows at a castle in Ireland in April 2017. Their family grew with the arrival of daughter Poppy in August 2020.

In May 2015, McIlroy told The Times of London that he and Stoll had been friends for three years and were close. He shared that he was very happy with his love life.

He also mentioned that being happy in his personal life positively affected his performance in golf. "When things are going well outside of golf, it helps me play better on the course," he explained.

In the same year, McIlroy expressed his happiness about his relationship with Stoll during a visit to Facebook's Dublin headquarters.

"Erica brings a sense of normalcy to everything for me. She has a calming presence that is noticeable in any company. She doesn't seek the spotlight and is content being in the background," he shared. "She has had a positive impact on me, bringing balance to my life between my public and private self."

Two years later, McIlroy reflected on his early days with Stoll and their connection.

He shared with the Irish Independent in January 2017 that what he loves most is that they were friends first before anything romantic happened. They first met when she was working for the PGA of America and renting a condo in Palm Beach. He appreciated being with someone who was living a normal life, rather than someone constantly focused on luxury and extravagance.

Rory McIlroy's return to the PGA Championship after his divorce filing highlights the complex interplay between personal life and professional performance. The absence of his wedding ring symbolizes a new chapter for McIlroy, who has always emphasized the importance of personal happiness in his golf game. His strong performance in the tournament suggests that he may be able to compartmentalize his personal struggles and focus on the task at hand.

McIlroy's previous statements about the positive impact of his relationship with Erica Stoll on his golf career underscore the importance of emotional stability for athletes. The divorce may create challenges for McIlroy in maintaining this balance, but it is also an opportunity for him to discover new sources of motivation and resilience. As he navigates this transition, McIlroy's ability to separate his personal and professional lives will be crucial to his continued success on the golf course.
