Rory McIlroy shared his thoughts on Grayson Murray's passing. He expressed deep sadness and conveyed his sympathies to Grayson's family. McIlroy mentioned that everyone is hoping the family is coping well during this difficult time. These comments were made to reporters on May 29, before the RBC Canadian Open.
"It's a cliche, but it really makes you think. Golf is just a game at the end of the day. Sure, we play it professionally, but it's not as important as the things that truly matter in life," said McIlroy, who is 35 years old. He made headlines recently for filing for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll.
"I've had to come to terms with this realization. I'm still figuring out how to not let golf consume me completely. It hits you hard when something like that happens," added the professional golfer from Northern Ireland.
McIlroy emphasized the importance of remembering that professional athletes are also human beings. He expressed deep sadness over Murray's death by suicide on Saturday, May 25. McIlroy highlighted the vulnerability and fragility that all individuals, including athletes, possess. He called for kindness towards one another as a valuable lesson to take away from the tragic event.
Murray's parents announced on Sunday, May 26, that the golfer had taken his own life. He had pulled out of the Charles Schwab Challenge tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, a few days earlier, due to illness.

"We have been trying to process the reality that our son is no longer with us for the past day," shared Murray's parents, Eric and Terry, in a statement published by the PGA on Sunday, May 26. "It feels like a surreal experience to not only accept it within ourselves but also to share this heartbreaking news with the world. It's like living a nightmare."
We are grateful for the support from the PGA Tour and the golf community during this difficult time. Despite Grayson facing challenges in life, we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace.
On May 13, McIlroy officially filed for divorce from his wife of seven years, Stoll.
The golfer hired a private investigator to serve Stoll with divorce papers while she was at their shared home in Jupiter, Florida. The Belfast Telegraph reported on Sunday, May 26, citing court documents they had obtained. At that time, McIlroy was in North Carolina competing in the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship.
