MCU veterans Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo recently admitted that there was an aspect of the superhero franchise that they didn't fully understand. Downey played the lead role in the debut installment of Iron Man in 2008 and continued to portray Tony Stark in several more projects before leaving the MCU in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
Ruffalo joined the franchise later, replacing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in 2012's The Avengers. Since then, he has continued in the role across multiple movies and TV shows, and unlike Downey, remains an active part of the MCU. Marvel Studios embraced the real-life friendship between Downey and Ruffalo during their MCU appearances, often pairing Stark and Banner as the "Science Bros".
Robert Downey Jr & Mark Ruffalo make hilarious MCU confession
The joint interview with Downey and Ruffalo for Variety revealed the highs and lows of their experience. Although the actors had fun filming their scenes together, they also faced challenges in understanding Tony and Bruce’s language-filled conversations.
"[Ruffalo] and I, known as the Science Bros, used to have these long conversations about complete nonsense... But it's still meaningful to us," Downey shared. "Because we understand the significance for the characters."
"Yeah, but we had no idea what that was, what it meant," Ruffalo added. "It would be really difficult to get into it," agreed Downey. "We would just drive each other crazy on set, asking 'Why can't I remember this?' But again, we know when to tighten things up a bit."
Ruffalo also took a moment to acknowledge the role Downey played in convincing him to join the MCU. "It was such a different world," Ruffalo explained. "They didn't really cast people like us. I'll never forget, I was like, 'I don't know if I'm right for this.' And [Downey] is like, 'Come on, Ruffalo, we got this.'"
Marvel Studios boss addresses Robert Downey Jr return rumors
Downey replied to Ruffalo's story with a witty comment about the immense financial success his former co-star experienced after joining the MCU. However, the Hollywood A-lister did not hint at any personal interest in returning to profit from Marvel Studios once more.
Studio president Kevin Feige recently confirmed that rumors of Robert Downey Jr suiting up as Iron Man in a future film are false. Feige stated, "We all worked very hard for many years to get to [Iron Man’s death], and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.” For the most recent MCU content, visit Dexerto’s full coverage here.

As a hard fan of MCU, I am very excited to see Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo talk about their experiences in the franchise. I think it's really interesting that they both admit to being baffled by a certain element of the superhero franchise. It's also great to hear that they had fun filming their scenes together, even though they faced challenges in understanding Tony and Bruce's language-filled conversations.
I'm also glad to hear that Robert Downey Jr. played a role in convincing Mark Ruffalo to join the MCU. It's clear that they have a great friendship, and it's been a lot of fun to watch them work together on screen. I'm sad to see that Robert Downey Jr. is unlikely to return to the MCU, but I understand why he would want to move on to other projects. I'm excited to see what the future holds for the MCU, and I'm sure that Mark Ruffalo will continue to be a big part of it.
